September 2024 BLC Newsletter

Hello Everyone, 

Hopefully everyone has been having a good summer, with lots of time on the water. Now that September is here, and the water temps are falling, I think it's safe to say its every muskie fisherman's favorite time of year. If you have been able to get out and have been lucky enough to get a few fish, please send those pictures to us. We would love to use them in our newsletter and slide shows. We have a few more MHOTY events coming up. Next, being September 14, which is Chapter Memorial Outing on Mantrap 7am-5pm. Second, is the outing on Leech September 21st. Lastly, for the month is the Fall outing on Lake Vermilion September 21st-28th. Hopefully we can get a big group together and catch some fish. Our chapter had two teams fish the Gil Ham on Lake of the Woods, with each team catching two fish. There were many more seen and lost with a few heart breakers. We did however have one youth member win the casting contest two nights in a row. Which he assured me he was going to save his money for a really, really nice fishing rod not a cheap one. We would like to wish all the students and teachers returning to the classroom a great and successful school year.

September 10th Meeting - Ryley Hansen - Guest Speaker

Ryley Hansen of Crazy Loon Guide Service will be joining us in September to talk about Leech Lake muskies. This will be a great primer for those fishing or considering fishing the Jeff Young Memorial Muskie Shootout in October. We hope to see you there!

Meetings are open to the public and FREE to attend! Chance to win various prizes from lures or maybe a rod in our meeting raffles. Come to hear and share fish stories and more. One random door prize drawing for those in attendance. Bring your friends!

Jeff Young Memorial - 2024 Muskie Shootout

The 2024 Jeff Young Memorial Muskie Shootout is almost here. With just a month to go, the time is now to get registered for this great event if you haven't already!

We will once again be headed back to Agency Bay Lodge on beautiful Leech Lake. Clear your calendar for the weekend of October 5 - 6, 2024 and register your team today.

Limited long-sleeve, t-shirt and hooded sweatshirt options are available at the tournament for purchase, as well.

BLC Memorial Chapter Challunge - Mantrap Lake

September 14th

Join your fellow BLC members for the Memorial Chapter Challunge on September 14th, 2024 from 7am - 5pm. Enjoy a bit of friendly competition on Mantrap Lake in Hubbard County. FREE EVENT for BLC members to attend and fish! 

Things to expect :

•Monies for big fish pot must be paid prior to the start of fishing time ($10 per person).

•Potluck after fishing hours are over.

•Prizes will be given out for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for fish caught.

•Lure raffles (if enough people attend)

•Camping option available - participants must reserve their own campsites.

Tell us a story: “We were fishing in the Detroit Lakes area on Big Detroit. We were driving at 4 mph listening to music. All the rods were laying in the bottom of the boat but my line was out. I felt a little tug on my lure and it was a muskie. We got it in the boat while dad was coaching me the whole time. It was chaos when it finally got in the boat!”

BLC Memorial Outing

September 14

Mantrap Lake - 7am to 5pm

This is separate from the MHOTY schedule and is run a bit more like a tournament style with prizes for the winner as well as big fish pot and raffles afterwards.

Catch a 50”+ muskie during the 2024 Muskie season, or catch your FIRST muskie and automatically get in for an annual, commemorative shirt!

Here’s how it works:



• You must be a current member in good standing as of the time the fish was caught 
• Submit a release form, minimum, to the BLC

Send us your photos - we’d love to be able to post these to social media, use in the newsletter, submit to MUSKIE magazine, use at the end of the year, and more! These photos can be of any fish caught throughout the season, not just the biggest fish - all Muskies matter!

Release forms can be filled out online (https://muskiesinc.org/) or sent to Nathan French at french.nathan22@gmail.com, along with any fish photos throughout the summer.

If you would like to participate in our 2024 release contest or be eligible for a free replica, please make sure to check out the above link and scroll down for requirements. Also remember that it can pay to participate in our release contest. All fish registered the previous month will go into a monthly drawing at our monthly meetings for a $25 Musky Tackle Online gift card. Must be present to win!

• July release drawing will be held at the September meeting. So we will draw for both July and August winners at that meeting.
