Greetings!
This month we'll be issuing our annual BLD evaluation survey and would appreciate you taking time to complete it.
We welcome your feedback for many reasons, but especially to:
- Target program areas that need additional work or a different approach.
- Identify issues of concern or interest to Florida library staff.
- Continue to build best practices in supporting your work.
- Ensure our services and programs are relevant and meaningful to you.
We open this survey to library directors, deans, faculty and staff throughout Florida, although we understand that not all of our services are applicable to everyone. Please feel free to address those areas with which you are most familiar and take a moment to write comments. Your comments are extremely important to us.
One of our goals is to make sure every library staff member knows about the Division and what we do. Will you help us work toward this goal by sharing the survey?
Wishing you a safe and healthy early summer!
Claudia

Adult Learning
Florida libraries work hard to engage and include everyone in services and programming.
Here are a few resources to help expand your efforts to serve Blind and Low Vision patrons:
The Florida Bureau of Braille and Talking Books Library staff is happy to talk about their services and how they can connect and partner with libraries.
Read more and contact them here:
800.226.6075
To help inform program planning, libraries can also reach out to predominantly blind user groups:
- Florida Council of the Blind
407.425.9200 and 800.267.4448
- National Federation of the Blind
305.972.8529
The Department of Blind Services (DBS) at the Florida Department of Education provides SeeDifferent workshops.
"Through these workshops, DBS works to change misperceptions about blindness that have created barriers for many with visual disabilities to fully engage in employment and other life activities.
The See Different Initiative helps people to see blindness from a different perspective and recognize the opportunities these individuals bring to Florida's communities."
SeeDifferent welcomes the opportunity to present trainings and participate in Q&A events, and they are prepared to present workshops virtually.

Community Engagement
June is Disaster Preparedness Month!
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Florida is known for its hurricanes and it’s important to consider what to do before, during and after the event. The Bureau has a webpage devoted to disaster preparedness and response. You can review basic resources to provide to patrons, how to prepare for a disaster, and view resources to build community resilience to disasters.
Let’s Chat: Community Check-In!
Does your library offer a planetarium pass? If so, what is the level of patron engagement with this opportunity? If not, would this type of pass be something you’re interested in exploring for your library patrons?
I’m interested in the level of engagement with planetarium passes and whether you’ve found it’s resulted in more library visits, whether currently or in the past.
The Community Engagement program exists to help tell and share library stories; but the program is also a resource to assist library staff with identifying and building potential partnerships and initiatives related to community engagement. Any suggestions or recommendations will be well-received. I look forward to hearing from you!

Beginning in June, the Bureau of Library Development will be hosting quarterly calls for directors of Florida's municipal public libraries. These calls will cover a range of topics, and attendees are encouraged to bring anything that they might like to discuss.
If you are a director of a municipal public library who would like to be added to the invitation list for these calls, please reach out to Director Connections consultant Emily Hart at emily.hart@dos.myflorida.com or 850.245.6633.

DLIS Discussion
What a great conversation about the Koha Library Software last month! Thanks to all who shared their experience or were there primarily to listen.
For our June DLIS Discussion, we hope you'll join us for our conversation on library lockers. Lockers have created a unique way for libraries to extend services to their community members beyond their library's hours and further than their library building. Whether your library has already implemented lockers, or your library is considering it, please join us to share tips, tricks and insights.

The Federal Communications Commission has released FCC-21-58 (PDF), establishing rules for the Emergency Connectivity Fund (ECF) Program, connecting schools and libraries to funding for remote learning equipment. The ECF was established by Congress in March 2021, as part of the American Rescue Plan Act.
These funds can be used to purchase Wi-Fi hotspots, routers, modems and end-user devices such as laptops and tablets. The rules also permit reimbursement for devices purchased since March 1, 2020, to support remote learning.
