REFLECTIONS in Bloom

"A Spooky October"

A Long Time Ago, 1970 something, when the kids of the day dressed up for Halloween, we all looked exactly alike! Why? No matter the human color we adorned under our costumes, (costumes being limited to roughly 10 options in the stores of the day), all you saw of any human features were little kid googly eyes peering through the plastic masks, never knowing who was behind them. That was the surprise for the households when they opened the doors in the neighborhood..."who's that behind the mask?!" they asked. And we would giggle, lift our masks and be sure to say, Trick or Treat!, and a THANK YOU, as we all knew, without that, you get NO Candy!

I will remind you that when I speak of "we", WE the Gen X'ers that grew up in the 70's and were teens in the 80's, our parents creative choices for instant Halloween Costumes lined several aisles of Bradlees/Woolworth's or Caldor, presented in boxes with creepy plastic masks peering through with empty eye sockets, forward facing the creature/character ready for the fright. Occasionally you had a mom or grandma that was handy with the sewing machine and a Dorothy or Scarecrow would show up! I was a "bum" one year; my Dad burnt the ends of a cork, and painted my face with black embers, and I essentially dressed in "bum clothes", ya, a homeless person. Oy the 70's...and I digress.

If you are of the younger generations, I KNOW you have all scene at least 1 70's Halloween meme on social media of all the Princesses, Clowns, Casper's, and Devil's of the day, sitting on the velveteen floral couch of someone's parents home, posing and sweating to death behind those plastic masks and costumes that we wore over our Winter Coats, because Mom made us! (Was it colder back then?, maybe).

It was spectacular how many Princesses, very CREEPY Clowns, and Planet of the Apes guys lined our classrooms, again, back in the day when we all went into school, allowed to dress in our Halloween costumes, ate cupcakes, downed a tremendous amount of sugar, did the Halloween Costume walk around the classrooms, and proudly showed off our plastic flammable outfits! IT WAS SO MUCH FUN! Kids being kids, albeit a different time, a different vibration, and a different world, at least for us kids, because we didn't know the wiser.

So, in the spirit of Spooky Season of the past, and shedding some light on the Dark Days ahead, let's all REFLECT on what it was like to Just Be a Kid. Take the kids Trick or Treating, get out behind the need to be "Pinterest Perfect" and the need to adorn "very best costume ever" on social media.

Put the phone down, pick up the flashlight, and Be Safe, Be Happy! Take YOUR Inner child out this Halloween, along with the kiddos, and darn it, put the FUN in your Flammable costume, and don't forget...

Trick or Treat, Smell my Feet, or give me something good to eat!...and I digress.

With HEART'Y laughter, giddy gratitude, and love, enjoy your October, Jump in a pile of leaves, and as always,

Stay Bloomin'! ~ Christine
