Message from the Chair

Dear BLS Members,

As the year winds to a close, our Section is anything but slowing down. December gives us a moment to take stock of the work we’ve accomplished, the issues still on the horizon, and the momentum carrying us into 2026.

This year our Committees and Task Forces have been exceptionally productive: delivering forward-looking CLEs, sharpening legislative priorities, and elevating the dialogue around the business law landscape in Florida. Your engagement (whether through drafting, teaching, testifying, mentoring, or simply showing up) continues to shape the professionalism and progress of our field.

Tallassee is already stirring with early signals of what the upcoming legislative session may hold. Our Legislation Committee is monitoring developments closely, and you’ll see regular updates as proposals evolve. Your expertise and responsiveness during this season are invaluable.

As you plan for the new year, don’t forget our January meeting is just around the corner. Registration numbers are strong, and hotel rooms are filling up faster than usual, so please secure your spot if you haven’t already. It’s always one of our best opportunities for connection, collaboration, and setting the tone for the year ahead.

Thank you for the time, insight, and energy you have invested this year. Our Section thrives because of the collective strength of its members, and I’m grateful to lead an organization filled with such thoughtful, committed professionals.

Wishing you a restorative holiday season and a bright start to the new year.

Warmly,

Stephanie Lieb, Chair

Past Chair/Judicial Spotlight: Mindy Mora, 2011-2012

Judge Mora served as Chair of the Business Law Section in 2011-2012 and was appointed to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida in 2018.

What have you gained from your involvement in the Section?

The Section has provided me with a unique and invaluable opportunity to contribute to the development and clarification of Florida’s commercial laws throughout my years of involvement. As a young lawyer, the Section gave me a platform to refine my public speaking skills—both during meetings and as a speaker at Section-sponsored seminars. Attending these meetings allowed me to build relationships and engage with many of the finest commercial lawyers across Florida. Most significantly, it gave me the rare chance to interact with judges in a collegial, informal setting—something that I believe played a meaningful role in my eventual appointment to the bench.

Which Committees/Task Forces have you served on within the Section?

Over the course of my legal career, I progressed through the ranks of the Bankruptcy/UCC Committee and even had the honor (and challenge!) of organizing the Labor Day Retreat. I have also served on several task forces, including the Fellows Retention Task Force, the UCRERA Task Force, the Judgment Lien Task Force, the FDUPTA Task Force, the Task Force on Revisions to the ABC Statute, and the UCC Article 12 Task Force. Currently, I serve as the Judicial Co-Chair of both the Bankruptcy/UCC Committee and the Long Range Planning Committee.

Why Sponsor the Business Law Section of The Florida Bar?

Florida isn’t just a state—it’s a global economic powerhouse. If it were an independent nation, Florida would rank among the top 15 largest economies in the world, boasting a GDP that rivals many major countries. The Business Law Section of The Florida Bar plays a critical role in shaping the commercial legal landscape of this economic titan. Our members are not only top-tier business lawyers—they’re the very individuals Florida legislators turn to when drafting or revising key commercial statutes. Sponsoring Business Law Section events like the Labor Day Retreat puts your organization directly in front of the thought leaders, power brokers, and policy shapers who influence business law and practice statewide—and often nationally.

This is more than a networking opportunity. It’s your chance to engage with the legal professionals guiding Florida’s economic future. In addition to the Labor Day Retreat, there are plenty of other sponsorship opportunities that provide year-round exposure through our Section’s ongoing programming, communications, and events. If your brand wants to be seen, respected, and remembered by the attorneys who help write the laws that govern business in one of the world’s most dynamic markets, this is where you need to be.
