BMBA NEWSLETTER # 1 for 2023

BMBA Domestic teams off and running

We have had a busy start to 2023 with four BMBA teams commencing in competitions at the Southern Basketball Association. That's a growth of 400% from the previous season and it could have been so much more.

After an extensive grading period the four teams have commenced their first games in the season proper over the past few weeks. See our article below for team reports. With uniforms to order and extra training to organise it has kept us extra busy over this first term of 2023. For this, we are very grateful after two years of almost having nothing to do.

Now that the season has started we can resume our schools programs, training programs and holiday programs, all of which we cover below.

BMBA Team Results

All of our BMBA teams have completed their grading phase and now have commenced their "season proper". Here is a summary of how they are going.

Under 10 Girls - 3 Wins 1 Loss - Ladder Position 2nd

The Under 10 Girls have had a great start to their season having won several games with one draw and a close loss in the mix. More importantly, the girls are showing improvement with each and every game. That should them have a very strong debut season.

Under 12(1) Boys - 1 Win, 1 Loss 1 Bye - Ladder position 7th

The Under 12(1) Boys won their first game last Saturday in convincing fashion. The boys had yet to win a game before that but had been extremely close before this win. This was a win that was thoroughly deserved and now that the boys have broken the ice, they can settle into their season and ensure they secure even more wins as they continue to improve with each week.

Under 12(2) Boys - 2 Losses 1 Bye - Ladder position 10th

Our U12(2) boys are made up entirely of boys in their first season. For this season our entire focus is on teaching them the game and getting them as much game experience as possible, where they develop new skills and learn the rules and nuances of the game. Our only expectation is for the boys to play hard and improve with each week. They are doing that already and played their best half of the season last Saturday.

Under 18 Boys - 4 Wins - Ladder position 1st

Our U18 boys have already had a season under their belts along with tournament experience and that along with the training that they have been receiving for the past twelve months is starting to bear fruit. The boys have had three comfortable wins and currently sit on top of their competition ladder and are playing some great team basketball. A good season beckons if they keep working to improve.

U12(2) Boys looking for players

Our U12(2) Boys are still looking for some more players. With only the six boys we have space for at least two more boys to join. If you have a son or know any boys born in 2012 or 2013 who would be interested in playing with this team and receiving some great coaching and development, then you can get in contact with us via our details at the foot of this newsletter to discuss.

U18 Boys learning valuable lessons

from tournament weekends.

A unique opportunity that we will be providing for all our BMBA teams when they are ready, is the chance to play in tournaments against representative standard teams.

Our Under 18 boys have been the first BMBA team to be exposed to this having played in both the Eltham/Dandenong Junior Basketball Tournament and the South East Junior Basketball Tournament at the start of 2023.

While encountering some tough games, the boys have benefitted from the experience which will teach them some valuable lessons as they strive to elevate the level of competition that they are playing in.

Our new Coat of Arms

What's behind it?

Next

You would have probably seen our Coat of Arms recently and it will be front and centre on our new uniforms that will soon be delivered.

It's one thing to have a Coat of Arms, it's another thing to understand the meaning and symbolism behind it. We believe that this is fundamentally important as it will mould the character and culture of the program that we are trying to build.

We have now published a page on our website covering this. Now you will know what it represents when our teams chant our motto "strength, Honour, Unity" before and after every game and training session.

June & September Holidays will be our

next Holiday Camps

Next

We will not be holding a camp over the Easter holidays but we will be back on board with some GREAT camps in the June and September School Holiday breaks. This year we are changing the format of our camps. We will be offering camps in both weeks of the holidays and camps will go for a full three day camp covering the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week of the holidays.

In this new format our Camps will now only be offered in a full block of three full days. In other words when you register your son/daughter it is for the full three days of any of our camp. While we enjoyed offering the flexibility of single day, morning and afternoon sessions, in reality they impeded the viability of our camps and ability to continue to conduct them into the future.

A full three day camp will also provide legitimate development options for our camp participants and they will allow us to better prepare and plan schedules for our camp sessions and participants.

We will also be providing camp t-shirts for all participants for the first time.

Through this format there will only be 20 spots available in each camp, so register your child now to avoid any disappointment.

Uniforms will be arriving soon.

Next

We received notification this week that our new uniforms will soon be with us.

They are in transit from our uniform manufacturers in China and and we hope to be handing them out to everybody over the next week. We cannot wait to see all of the BMBA kids in our new kits and we hope that will be as soon as this weekend.

Also Included within that uniform order will be samples for our polos where we can finally measure up the kids for our their polos properly. Our apologies for this taking longer than we had hoped, but from this point onwards we will have a surplus stock that we can replenish as orders are made, so it won't be an issue into the future.

Once the polos are sorted we will begin working on more BMBA merchandise. Keep an eye out for this in future newsletter editions.

Become a BMBA investor.

Next

From this week we will be approaching business and potential "angel" investors to help us build our basketball program and services with the ultimate ambition of obtaining our own training and games venue, something that no other basketball club or Association has in Melbourne.

In doing so we are offering returns of between 20% and 30% and we thought we should also make this offer to the parents of kids who are participating in our programs, so we have come up with the following opportunity.

BMBA participant Investors

If you think your son or daughter is locked in for the long haul, especially if they are playing or intend to play and will be involved for twelve months or more, then why not consider becoming a BMBA investor? If you can pay twelve months of registration fees up front ($1,000.00) then at the end of that twelve months we will provide you with one term of training (valued at $250.00) FREE of charge.

That's a return of 25% in just over twelve months, try and obtain that from one of our banks!

If you would be interested in this opportunity send me an email via my accounts at the foot of this email newsletter.

We're also looking for more serious

Investors in the BMBA.

As we said in the above article one of our grandest ambitions that we have at the BMBA is to secure our own training and games venue.

In other words our own stadium.

We have both the experience and the business plan to bring this project to life, but we will need some serious "Angel Investors" to pull it off.

If you would be somebody who would consider such an investment or you know of somebody who would consider it, then please get in contact with me via my details below. As mentioned above we will be approaching businesses across the Eastern and South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne over the next twelve months to secure this ambition and in doing so an exciting future for the BMBA basketball program.

We're Hoping for some good news soon.

Speaking of venues for training, we have lodged a bid for training access at the new indoor court at Glen Huntly Primary School where we have been currently training on their outdoor court on Wednesdays. This is a fantastic indoor venue and would be a terrific venue for our kids to train in.

We hope to hear about this bid in the next week. We will let you know as soon as we are advised.

If we are successful we will need as many BMBA investors as mentioned above and as many new BMBA participants registering into our programs and teams as possible. Access to this facility won't be cheap. If we operate it to its capacity though we will ensure the future of the BMBA program and ensure your kids enjoy the BEST basketball program in Melbourne.

Our Long Term Ambition for the BMBA.

Another reason we are looking for investors is to be in a position to develop a venue of our own through leasing a warehouse and converting it into our own training and competitions venue for BMBA teams, players and participants. It is our goal to achieve this in the next 12 to 24 months.

We will be finalising our business plan for this ambitious project over the Easter Holidays. If you know of any person or business who might like to assist us with this ambition as an investor, please pass them on my details for a presentation.

Oakleigh Basketball Association AGM.

Another one of the things we wish to provide for all of our BMBA players and teams is the opportunity to play junior representative basketball or as it's commonly referred to "Rep Ball".

Between 2010 and 2016 the Oakleigh Basketball Association's junior and open-aged rep teams played at some of the highest levels of representative competition and won a number of division and tournament titles. In those six years we had six of our junior teams reach the State's top division of competition in the Victorian Championships and three times they made the top ten in the state's rankings. From this, in 2015 we had our first junior player make both the state and Australian teams. He has now gone on to play in the NBL. Many of our former players now also play in the elite NBL1 and BIG V open-age competitions. Sadly due to the actions of some nefarious individuals that all came to an end in 2016.

One of the purposes of the BMBA is to bring the Oakleigh Basketball Association not only back to its previous status but to an even greater level of basketball excellence. To achieve that we need to recruit people to sit on a committee for the Oakleigh Basketball Association. The good news is the BMBA will be doing all the work and taking on all the responsibility so the workload for any committee will be both light and straightforward but vitally important in creating pathways for BMBA juniors to have the opportunity to play at those higher levels.

If you would like to get involved or would like more information then please get in touch with me via my contact details below. Our first effort in this campaign is to conduct an AGM to have a committee elected.

The AGM will be held on Thursday, 4th of May commencing at 7:30 pm at the Oakleigh RSL Club, 95-97 Drummond Street Oakleigh.
