UNR’s Financial Aid Information Amid COVID-19

  • The FAFSA form remains open until June 30, 2020. Any student or family who has not yet completed a FAFSA may still do so.
  • For those who have completed a FAFSA, and whose financial circumstances have changed considerably, we encourage you to reach out to your institution’s financial aid office. Financial aid administrators are afforded a degree of professional judgment under the law for state and federal aid, as well as for institutional aid, and can work with students and families whose incomes have been negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • For other questions related to the COVID-19 outbreak and federal financial aid, visit https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/coronavirus
  • Need to appeal your financial aid decision? Click HERE for resources and letter templates.
  • As of now, the second Summer Session (July 13 – August 13) is scheduled to continue with in-person classes as planned. This may change to an online delivery of classes, though, depending on how the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds.
  • All other summer sessions (mini, first, regular) will be delivered online. If you know of any graduating seniors who are attending UNR in the fall and were planning on taking classes during second summer session, please encourage them to continue that journey. It’s important that they understand that things may change and flexibility is key. They may also enroll in the other summer sessions, but they need to keep in mind that those courses will be delivered online and may be more demanding and challenging than they might expect.
  • That being said, incoming freshmen should now have the ability to add summer classes through their MyNEVADA accounts. To enroll in classes, they will first need to complete the Summer Session Activation form found under Supplemental Forms in MyNEVADA (if they haven’t already). They should answer ‘yes’ on the form to taking summer classes, and then wait about 24 hours before trying to enroll. There’s an online guide for enrolling in classes that can help. We generally suggest that incoming freshmen take classes during second session (July 13 – August 13) and that they take the Math and English classes they placed into. However, there are several other classes they may take and if they’re unsure, they should reach out to their UNR recruiter or an Academic Advisor in their department for advice.
  • Once they enroll in summer classes, the next step will be to complete the Summer Freshman Start Tuition Award application, which will be available on our website (freshmanstart.unr.edu) starting May 1. The awards are for $1500 towards summer tuition and are given out on a first come, first serve basis.
  • If you have students who would like to place into a higher English or math class, they may attempt to do so through our free Math Tutoring for Accuplacer Success series (the signup form is now active!) or through our free First-Year Writing Placement Portfolio Workshops.
  • UNR’s Coronavirus page is updated regularly and helpful for keeping informed.
