Re: Petition to Pass S.4973: The No Kings Act
Dear Senator Schumer:
Thank you for your dedicated service to this country as a U.S. Senator and Majority Leader; your leadership has been instrumental in navigating our nation through challenging times. The Bellmore Merrick Democratic Club (BMDC) is grateful for your unwavering commitment to ensuring the timely confirmation of judges before the year concludes. However, we would like to emphasize the importance of prioritizing one specific bill that we believe deserves immediate attention and consideration before President-Elect Trump assumes office once again.
The recent Supreme Court ruling, which grants a president immunity from criminal accountability for actions taken during their presidency "makes a mockery of the principle, foundational to our Constitution and system of government, that no man is above the law," writes Supreme Court Justice Sotomayer.
Congress, as a cornerstone of our democracy, holds not just the authority but a profound obligation to scrutinize the Supreme Court's decision that allows the president to evade criminal prosecution. This isn't merely a legal issue; it's a matter of safeguarding the values that define our nation. With the introduction of the No Kings Act, you will be taking definitive steps to reinforce accountability and uphold the rule of law, reminding us all that in this great experiment of democracy, no one is above the law—not even the president. The No Kings Act rightly provides that:
“A President, former President, Vice President, or former Vice President shall not be entitled to any form of immunity (whether absolute, presumptive, or otherwise) from criminal prosecution for alleged violations of the criminal laws of the United States unless specified by Congress.”
As devoted citizens of this great nation, it is our responsibility to stand united against the looming threat of a kleptocracy, which the president-elect seems poised to usher in. In a proactive move, the BMDC has taken the initiative to circulate an online petition advocating for the swift passage of the “No Kings Act,” which has already garnered over 3,000 signatures—a testament to the collective will of the people. Click here to read the petition.
This is a critical moment for the U.S. Senate to demonstrate its commitment to democracy and integrity, and to show the world where it stands in the fight for justice and accountability. Therefore, we earnestly urge you to prioritize bringing S.4973 to the floor for a vote, ensuring that history records not only our efforts to uphold the values we cherish, but to show who will stand on the right side of history.
Thank you for your attention to this vital matter.
Very truly yours,
Claudia Borecky, President
