President's Column: Giving thanks and looking forward

As we head into the holiday season, I want to thank you, our members and friends, for making the Biomedical Engineering Society stronger and healthier than it has ever been.

At its core BMES is a professional membership society, so you -- our members -- are the most important ingredient to the society's success.

I know many of you joined us in Philadelphia for the 2019 Annual Meeting; it was a great time to catch up with colleagues, make new friends, and to see all the great work going on in labs all over the world.

While the Annual Meeting is our premiere event, there are many other great ways to be engaged with BMES throughout the year.

Advanced registration rates are $125 less than on-site rates for all BMES members.

After Dec. 12, registration will only be available onsite.

The meeting is January 2-6, 2020 at the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar, Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort

Martine LaBerge leads Clemson University bioengineering to new heights

A recent Clemson University article highlights BMES Fellow Martine LaBerge's 17-year career at the university.

LaBerge said that in her 17 years leading Clemson University's bioengineering department, she has learned something about leadership that she passes on to colleagues who are just starting down the same path.

"I tell them it's all about people," she said. "You get people aligned under one roof to believe in one brand and to have a mission that is focused on something other than themselves."

At the 2019 Annual Meeting, LaBerge was presented with the inaugural Herbert Voigt Distinguished Service Award. The honor recognizes her extraordinary service to the society through volunteering and leadership.
