Congress to Tackle Government Funding After Spring Break

Following the two-week spring break, Congress will have to find a solution funding the federal government and avoid a government shutdown. The current spending agreement expires on April 28th, which means just four days will remain when both the House and Senate are in sessions when Congress comes back to work. Any agreement will have to be at least somewhat bipartisan to attract support among some Senate Democrats.

Several controversial items that could affect a final agreement are funding for a wall along the U.S. - Mexico border and labor provisions related to overtime pay and silica exposure. Negotiations will continue over the break
to avoid a government shutdown.

This will be the second year that the BMSA Guide will be produced.

"We were thrilled with the 2016 Guide and are looking forward to the 2017 Guide," said Lynn Schwarz, President of BMSA. "We're pleased to offer such a needed resource, which will greatly assist industry professionals in making educated purchasing decisions throughout the year."

Like the 2016 version, the 2017 edition of the Guide will feature updated and expanded company and product listings, in addition to other valuable information relating to the building material industry. The Guide provides users with an efficient way to browse for goods and services and offers building material suppliers and companies exceptional visibility by showcasing their products and services to a targeted, industry-specific buyer group.

The 2017 Guide will be accessible through the BMSA website at www.mybmsa.org this Summer, and you can currently view the 2016 Guide there. Canada More Hopeful for a New SLA Under Trump

British Columbia Premier Christy Clark thinks that drafting a new softwood lumber agreement (SLA) between Canada and the U.S. will be much easier under the new administration, 660 NEWS reports.

Clark cites Trump's "background in construction and [his understanding of] the impact the cost of materials has on a finished product" as to part of the reason why she thinks Trump's administration will be more forthcoming in talks than Obama's administration.

Yet, despite this optimism, SLA talks have "waned" under Trump, according to Kirsten Hillman, Canada's top negotiator for a new SLA. Several positions have yet to be filled or approved in Trump's administration and some of those positions are "key players to work on the [softwood lumber] file." Click here to read more.
