Aging with Resilience and Enthusiasm SIG

Friday, June 9 at 10am

We will be discussing “Surprises that Come with Aging.” It will be an open discussion for us. Use these questions to enable us to talk with each other:

1.    What surprised you about aging?

2.    Have you experienced a string of surprises or have you only encountered a couple?

3.    What was the most pleasant surprise?

4.    What was the most unpleasant?

5.    Was there a surprise that ended up making life better or easier?

6.    Was there a surprise that knocked your life off track?

Looking forward to hearing how aging has surprised us over the years! Watch for a Zoom link on Monday or Tuesday on the fifth or sixth!

Join us on June 9th! Sandy Miller-Jacobs, Bonnie Seider, and Linda Wolfson

BOLLI Play Reading Group

Friday, June 9 from 3:00pm to 4:30

Last month, we read Act 1 of “The Matchmaker,” a comic farce by none other than Thornton Wilder, who is well-known for having written the play “Our Town.” This Friday we’ll finish the play by reading Act 2.

Be prepared for a series of mistaken identities, secret rendezvous behind well-placed screens, separated lovers, and a trip to night court, as a wealthy Yonkers merchant hires a widowed matchmaker to find him a wife.

"The Matchmaker" opened on Broadway in 1955, and later became the basis for the musical “Hello Dolly.”

We’re a group of people who love reading plays out loud. We meet via Zoom on the second Friday of the month at 3:00 p.m. The play's script is displayed on the screen, and we take turns reading the various parts. No auditions or previous play reading experience is necessary! All are welcome. To receive the Zoom link, please contact Bonnie Alpert at [email protected]

Make a Difference

Tuesday, June 13 from 4:00 to 5:00

On May 16 we touched on the specific Third Act project of “Senior-to-Senior," a project whereby Seniors (like BOLLI members) might engage high school “Seniors” to encourage voter registration among them, with an aim to push for further progress on the climate/environmental political front. We can expect to return to “Senior-to-Senior” at our next MaD meeting on June 13 (Tuesday, 4:00-5:00) — sounds like a very promising activity in which we could encourage one another to push forward on climate and related issues!

Trust by Hernan Diaz: The rise of the country’s richest man in the early 20th century is told first in a novella within the novel then by multiple narrators who each provide new detail and perspective in revealing what is true. The novel was one of the New York Times ten best books of 2022 and won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Friday, August 4 at 9:30am

Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton: An activist group of guerilla gardeners sees opportunity in an apparently abandoned farm ripe for cultivation. With a ruthless billionaire eyeing the same land for mysterious purposes, deceit and suspense keep the pages turning toward a potential catastrophe with global implications.

The Book of Goose by Yiyun Li explores an all-consuming friendship between two young girls in rural post-war France as they hatch a plot that launches one of them into a world she could never have imagined. This acclaimed novel is a haunting story of friendship, art, and memory.

"A Besere Velt" - Yiddish Chorus Concert

Saturday, June 10 at 7:30 at MIT's Kresge Auditorium

BOLLI member Steve Ostrow ([email protected]) writes: Here’s word of the upcoming (June 10!) concert of my Yiddish Chorus concert. We’re “A Besere Velt” — “A Better World,” and I’ve been a member for 23 years. We are in fact one of the most recognized Yiddish choruses in the world — and the largest in the universe! I’ve been able to mention this already to a handful of you, but I’m guessing that for most of you this may be the first word you’re hearing about it. It promises to be an exciting and moving evening, and alongside the chorus it stars the renowned Yiddish songster Dan Kahn.

If you can attend in person or by streaming I think you’ll be in for a real treat: We’re talking songs of struggle, songs of workers, songs of victory and social progress, alongside songs of lullaby, nostalgia, yearning. You get the idea, all by way of “building a better world”!

It’s Saturday June 10, 7:30, at MIT’s (comfy!) Kresge Auditorium
