Gaps exist in knowledge and tools to understand and assess biological responses to metal implants in clinical and regulatory contexts. The agency is taking a closer look at metals used in medical devices.

The school received a CNC 5 Axis Mill, Swiss lathe and a 3D metal printer to give students, engineers and designers access to high-tech devices needed to develop and test new products and prototypes.

Previously available in Asia Pacific and European markets, the TSolution One system is now cleared for use in the U.S. in total knee replacement.

Zimmer Biomet introduced additively manufactured porous titanium implants. Aegis added expandable cages to its portfolio, and CarboFix launched another device made from carbon fiber. 

The biocompatible material can be used to inhibit bio-film adhesion on orthopedic device components, to address the issue of post-surgical infections following hip and knee replacement.

The startup plans to complete pre-clinical trials within the month and commence first human trials by the end of 2019. The project seeks to reduce the cost of synthetic bone production by half.



Namal Nawana will step down from his position on October 31, by mutual agreement, to pursue opportunities outside of the U.K. Incoming CEO, Roland Diggelmann, takes on the role in November.

Clinical trials are underway in the U.S. and China for use of stem cell therapies to treat knee osteoarthritis. U.S. product commercialization is commencing for a regenerative stem cell procedure.
