Description: 

This workshop will explore treatment delivery considerations in working with clients that are immigrants from Latin countries. Many of these children have experienced significant stressors related to displacement, loss, and adjustment to new environments. Play therapy provides a safe and developmentally appropriate space for children to express emotions, build trust, and develop coping skills through creative nonverbal communication. This workshop will also explore the use of culturally sensitive approaches to best support immigrant children’s unique healing processes and foster

resilience, emotional growth, and a sense of safety. It will also incorporate techniques on how to best support migrant families.


Learning Objectives:


  • Identify current trends that are impacting and shaping the presentation of immigrant children and families, within the context of treatment.
  • Explain in detail the common mental health symptoms seen in immigrant children.
  • Define“cultural broker” and how it can be helpful in increasing engagement and fostering a sense of safety within families.
  • Explain 2 social skills development play techniques to improve peer interactions and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrate emotional expression and regulation “play techniques.”
  • Describe 3 culturally informed play techniques that foster security and safety.


Presenters: Virginia Rivera, LPC-S, LCPC, RPT™, CCTP

Ms. Rivera is a bilingual Child and Family Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor (both in VA and MD), a Registered Play Therapist™, and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. She has over 28 years of providing mental health therapy, primarily to Spanish-speaking populations in the Northern Virginia area. She currently works at the Multicultural Clinical Center in Springfield, VA, providing outpatient mental health therapy and as serving as a Clinical Supervisor. She has experience with both county-based community mental health and private practice. She has vast insight into families facing many challenges like deportation and immigration concerns. Ms. Rivera also currently works as the Clinical Support Specialist at Synergy Family Services in Hyattsville, MD. In her role, she creates/conduct clinical trainings and assist with training of new clinicians in their outpatient mental health clinic that provides home-based counseling services to a predominately Latine population, many of whom are recent immigrants to the United States of America.

Cancellation Policy:


Written notification of cancellation must be received in our office at least 10 business days prior to a training for a refund. A $25.00 cancellation fee will be deducted from the refund. There will be no refund for cancellation notification less than 10 business days.


CBPS reserves the right to cancel a training due to inclement weather or insufficient enrollment. In the event of such cancellation, you will receive a full refund.
