Crown Bakeries is a customer service-focused group of passionate bakers that bring tailored solutions to foodservice, food manufacturing, and retail customers throughout America. BOX Studios was retained to reimagine its office and welfare spaces for its growing business located in various states. The Smyrna, Georgia location was selected to be the initial beta site for the new design brand renovation work.

The office space was programmed to feature a synergetic research and development baking-specific kitchen/lab, a newly added 2nd floor business office center with applicable support spaces, a product manufacturing facility, and a factory-employee welfare suite featuring new locker rooms, factory-focused private offices, a wellness room, and employee kitchen/café doubling as a multi-purpose space.

Working closely with the client, a design/build contractor, and other key consultants, BOX Studios developed a compact, layered, and harmonious space which showcases Crown Bakeries’ new brand identity. The concept is rooted in baking, common ingredients, and its people. The new facility matches the company’s, "No detail too small – no crumb overlooked!” ethos and will serve as the standard for their on-going excellence in baking and customer service for years to come.

As you step into the Crown Bakeries facility, you are greeted by a blend of harmonious finishes, a comforting palette of colors, a dynamic layer of ceiling elements, and an immersive baking-focused experience that embodies the essence of the brand.

The decorative stairway connects the first floor to the new second floor expansion. The oak stair treads with exposed layered edges mimic the levels found in baked goods, while the metal mesh riser and floating metal ceiling are conceptually reminiscent of a baker’s cooling rack.

The flat-screen monitor, high-tech video conferencing equipment, and integrated LED lighting systems are feature elements in the new office Boardroom. Wallscape panels offer acoustics and texture to the room’s feature wall, while the rated glass opening into the production plant offer a dynamic view of their baking production process.

The best-in-class R&D space is designed with lab-appropriate finishes that feature an aesthetic edge uncommon in such research spaces. The high-bay light fixtures bode well for working lab employees, offering both functionality and a touch of high design.

The Welfare Break Area features efficient and flexible seating, utilizing finish materials that are easy to clean and maintain. The versatile space is planned to serve as a breakroom and group training space for the factory employees. The wheat germ-shaped ceiling clouds are a nod to Crown's brand, while serving as a height barrier to balance the scale of the 24’ high room.
