When we think of royalty, we think of kings and queens who are sitting on ornate thrones, have long-flowing robes, and wear a crown. There is much pageantry associated with our concepts of a royal person. We also tend to view a monarchy as a form of government where one individual has absolute power. Over the last century, we have seen a lot of those images change and fewer kings and queens who are anything more than a figure head.

This Sunday in the Church we celebrate two important liturgical events. The first is that it is the "last" Sunday of the liturgical year. Designating it as the last Sunday of the liturgical year only really has the impact of changing the lectionary sequence for worship leaders and starting a new liturgical cycle. We start the liturgical year with Advent (beginning) and we conclude the liturgical year with Christ the King Sunday which is pointing us toward the full establishment of the Kingdom of God.

On Christ the King Sunday, we acknowledge Jesus, the Christ, as our Lord and the King of our lives. Yet the form of kingship which Jesus exhibits is much different than that of human royalty. For Jesus, it is a much different power which undergirds his lordship. This is what we will be exploring as part of our worship on Sunday. I invite you to consider how Jesus is different than a human king and how that impacts our declaration of him as king of our lives.

Blessings,

Pastor Mark

ADVENT

SUNDAY STUDIES

Fall Sunday Studies classes will end Nov 24. Our Advent Sunday Studies will begin on December 1 with the class "History of Christmas Hymns". The class will continue on 12/8, led by Scott Hill and Jane Schneider.

(There will be no Sunday Studies for December 15, 22, and 29. Winter Studies will resume on January 5.)

FILL the ADVENT TREE!

Our Advent Tree was filled last Sunday with Operation Christmas Shoe Boxes, but they have now been shipped off. So it's time to fill it up with our Advent donations.

This year we have 2 projects to fill the tree:

  • Gently used clothing for the Clothes Closet at 1st Pres: Especially needed are men’s pants, belts, shoes, jackets and sweatshirts.
  • For the food pantry, there is a special need for evaporated milk, saltines, soup and spaghetti sauce. Always needed are corn, green beans, canned beans and peanut butter.

IN MEMORY & IN HONOR:

MIFA PLUS1 GIVING

DONATIONS to MIFA-Plus1 in Memory or in Honor of someone will continue again this year. A donation of $12 per person in memory or in honor will help those in need to receive assistance for their utility bills. The list of names honored or memorialized will be listed in the bulletins on Christmas Eve and the Sunday after Christmas. Make checks made out to Balmoral and attach a note of the names of those to be in memory or in honor! Place them in the offering plates or mail to the church’s PO box. All checks must be received by Sunday, December 15 in order to be listed in the bulletin for Christmas Eve.

Presbyterian Women

CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON

PW will not have its regular meeting on December 4. We are having our Christmas luncheon Saturday, December 7 at 12:00 at Fratellis, located in the Botanic Gardens.

(Bible Study will meet again in classroom A on January 8.)

BOOK CLUB

CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON

December 10, 11:30am

December's Book Club will meet December 10th for a potluck lunch: Ted Pearson will lead us in a poem or two by Donald Hall, a poet, writer and literary critic living in New England who died in 2018. More will follow about how you can access the poem(s).

The potluck will begin at 11:30 a.m. Janice Hill will provide the chicken casserole we've shared the last couple of years. We will need side dishes and desserts.

The location is not definite yet.

NEWSLETTER SCHEDULE CHANGE for THANKSGIVING WEEK

Newsletters and bulletins are usually completed on Thursdays each week, so Thanksgiving week requires some changes each year, since the office will be closed on Thursday & Friday of Thanksgiving week.

The NEWSLETTER for next week will be emailed on WEDNESDAY, Nov. 27. Articles are still due by Monday night as usual, but no late articles can be accepted, so plan accordingly!

(NOTE: the bulletin for 12/1 is already printed, so any new announcements will not appear until 12/8.)

ALL TEAM and

SMALL GROUP LEADERS.....

WE NEED YOUR HOLIDAY SCHEDULE CHANGES!

Many of the events on BPC's Church Calendar are initially entered as "recurring events" that repeat on a set day/time. But during the holidays, groups sometimes change dates or times for their Holiday Parties/Luncheons, or cancel them altogether!

Please let us know if you are making any changes to your normally scheduled meetings or location over the holidays - we'll make sure it's on the calendar correctly. If you want a special article in the newsletter about your event, you can also let us know that - you can word the article yourself OR we'll do it for you if you provide all the details you want mentioned.

NEWS from the PC(USA)

A Presbyterian heritage of courage and faith

On October 19, a group of 14 - pilgrims, really - from the Synod of Lakes and Prairies arrived at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. As part of their civil rights journey through Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, they came to walk the grounds where history holds its breath, to witness a Presbyterian institution that bears the weight of the past with the dignity of the present and the promise of the future.
