Being known is one of the greatest gifts that a person can receive. God created us to be people who desire to be in relationship. Whether we are more introverted or extroverted, we want someone to acknowledge our existence. Introverted individuals just want smaller numbers of people and for shorter periods of interaction. Along with a desire to be known, we also seek to be understood.

As followers of Christ, we acknowledge that we are in need of someone who can speak on our behalf. Every Sunday during worship we confess that we are sinners and are in need of a savior. Someone that can understand our struggles and relate to our human weaknesses so that the Divine may hear our situation. In Jesus Christ, we have such a person.

Jesus for approximately 33 years experienced what we experience emotionally, physically, and spiritually. The Son became one of us so that we might better relate to God. The temptations, the feelings, the questions, the struggles were real for him. He experienced physical and emotional pain. Because of this, we can have confidence in his stating of our case before the Divine.

This Sunday we will explore together what it means that Christ became and is one of us.

Blessings,

Pastor Mark

HURRICANE HELENE ASSISTANCE OPPORTUNITY

from the Mid-South Presbytery:

Dear Friends,

Our prayers are with our friends in Christ in east Tennessee and western North Carolina following Hurricane Helene. In addition to our prayers, there are a number of physical things that are greatly needed in the heartbreaking aftermath of Hurricane Helene. One item that is in short supply are these flood clean up buckets. The Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Program (PDA) has deployed over 3,000 buckets as part of the flood response and has less than 1,000 left in reserve. These buckets are easy to assemble and are an excellent way for congregations of all sizes and ages to participate. We are encouraging our churches to participate in collecting and assembling these flood buckets. If your congregation cannot physically assemble these buckets, they can still participate by donating funds.

You do not need to mail these buckets or kits. We will collect the buckets at the Presbytery office in Memphis (449 Patterson Avenue) and then deliver them directly to Ferncliff. Before delivering the buckets, please contact the Presbytery office (901) 324-7701 or email midsouthp@gmail.com to make delivery arrangements. In addition, if you are interested, here is the website with more information on the buckets.

Thank you so much for participating in this much-needed project.

-Presbytery of the Mid-South

Balmoral Presbyterian Church's Outreach Team is encouraging our congregation to be part of this effort. The Outreach Team is accepting completed buckets or donations to make completed buckets. Bring buckets or donations to the church building and team members with get them to the Presbytery office. For more information, contact Scott Dawson at (901) 849-1685 or Pastor Mark.

SANDWICH-MAKING MINISTRY

This ministry opportunity, previously called the "Sandwich Project,"

has traditionally been held on the 4th Thursday of the month. In order to give more people opportunities to serve, we are moving it to the fourth Sunday of the month after Worship, starting this month. Each of you is invited to stay after worship to make ham and cheese sandwiches for the soup kitchen at First Presbyterian Church. For more information, contact Kristen Gurlen.

THANK YOU to all who made a donation to the Peace & Global Witness offering! If you would still like to make a donation, send your checks marked for the Peace Offering and mail to the church or donate online at https://specialofferings.pcusa.org/make-a-gift/gift-info/peace-global-witness/

APCE is COMING to TOWN in 2025...

AND VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!

The annual conference of APCE, the Association of Partners in Christian Education, will be held at the Peabody Hotel in downtown Memphis in 2025. APCE is an organization of people across the country interested in or working in Christian Education as Sunday School teachers or specialists. Their annual conference usually has 400 to 500 people registered. They will be at the Peabody from January 28 to February 1, 2025, and the Local Committee for this conference is chaired by Stephanie Patton, Lucy Cummings and KC Warren.

The Local Committee needs volunteers to greet the participants, offer directions, decorate tables (decorations provided), and do other light tasks that will make the conference run smoothly.

We are asking you to consider offering 4 hours of your time for a shift at the conference - or more shifts if your schedule will allow.

If you prefer to volunteer with a friend, both of you should sign up in the next few weeks while most shifts are available. That way, you and your friend can ride together - and maybe shop or have a meal before or after your shift! There is parking right at the Peabody, and those who register early will be offered parking vouchers to cover the cost.

So in advance, thank you for giving 4 hours or more of your time to this wonderful event!

Please sign up at the link below. We will be in touch in a couple of months regarding parking information and other details that will be helpful.

If you have questions, please contact the Volunteer subcommittee - Patsy Krech - patsykrech@gmail.com or Akwi Aseh - akwiaseh@gmail.com.

WANT to ATTEND the EVENT???

The APCE Annual Event is the conference to attend if you serve in educational ministry in any capacity.

There are two ways to experience APCE’s 2025 Annual Event…

  • In person at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee, January 29 – February 1 with 60+ workshops and a variety of Pre-Event and Post-Event opportunities and time to renew connections with long-time colleagues and connect with new.
  • Annual Event Online which includes all the worship and plenary sessions and your choice of four (of 14) hybrid workshops. Select components of Annual Event Online will be interpreted in Spanish.

Registration and APCE conference information can be found here:
