FALL SUNDAY STUDIES
9:30am in Classroom A
Fall Term Sunday Studies runs from September 15 through November 24. Our study will be Peaceful Neighbor (Discovering the Countercultural Mister Rogers) by Michael Long.
Fred Rogers was one of the most radical pacifists of contemporary history. We do not usually think of him as radical, partly because he wore colorful, soft sweaters made by his mother. Nor do we usually imagine him as a pacifist; that adjective seems way too political to describe the host of a children's program known for its focus on feelings. We have restricted Fred Rogers to the realm of entertainment, children, and feelings, and we've ripped him out of his political and religious context. Rogers was an ordained Presbyterian minister, and although he rarely shared his religious convictions on his program, he fervently believed in a God who accepts us as we are and who desires a world marked by peace and wholeness.

Last month I spent some time in Colorado both for vacation and for continuing education. On both trips, I had the great joy of spending time hiking in the Rocky Mountains. I find hiking/walking to be a wonderful way to relieve stress and get some much-needed exercise at the same time. There were times when the trail upon which we were was a little difficult or treacherous. However, by staying focused, I was able to navigate the terrain without any falls.
Jesus spends some time speaking with his followers to let them know that the path which he, and us, are called to take in our lives and our faith will not always be easy. We will be required to make declarations and to adjust how we live to fit according to the purpose of God's kingdom. We must be willing to dedicate ourselves to a commitment that may be unpopular and often misunderstood.
The way in which we are able to follow this path which Jesus describes is to remain focused. Specifically, remain focused upon the Lord. Having this type of focus will help us from making too many missteps. This focus will also allow us to navigate the terrain of life in the best way possible.
This Sunday we will look at some difficult teaching from Jesus about the path too which we have been called. Come bringing your questions and your thoughts as we also worship the Lord who is our focus.
Blessings,
Pastor Mark

Equipping Peacemakers in Congregations and Around the World.
A gift to the Peace & Global Witness Offering enables the church to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of conflict and injustice across the world. Individual congregations are encouraged to utilize up to 25% of this Offering for peacemaking efforts that align with their passion. Mid-councils retain an additional 25% for ministries of peace and reconciliation. The remaining 50% is used by the Presbyterian Mission Agency to advocate for peace and justice in cultures of violence, including our own, through collaborative projects of education and Christian witness.
