Space Coast Jr. / Sr. High's JROTC Named Among Inaugural Cohort for Space Force Program
|
|
Huge congratulations go out to Space Coast Jr. / Sr. High's JROTC program which is one of only ten units selected to be in the inaugural cohort of high school Space Force SFJROTC detachments.
Being included means this school will make history for its inclusion in this initial group of select units as they are converted from Air Force to Space Force JROTC.
Considerations for unit selection included school proximity to Space bases, facilities, and centers of influence (e.g., Space Command Headquarters, NASA, Missile Defense Agency, etc.) or current Senior Aerospace Instructor (SASI) cadre with prior space operations experience.
The 10 programs selected are:
- Arlington Career Center, Arlington VA
- Del Norte High School, Albuquerque NM
- Durango High School, Las Vegas NV
- Falcon High School, Falcon CO
- Huntsville High School, Huntsville AL
- Klein High School, Spring TX
- Shadow Mountain High School, Phoenix AZ

BPS Employees Win Space Coast TPO
Awards

Karen Reese received the 'Encouragement Award.' Last year, Ms. Reese was a dedicated member of the School Routes Analysis Technical Committee and attended every meeting and field review without fail. Her knowledge regarding bus transportation and the history of many schools was integral to the study. Her passion and enthusiasm regarding safe school transportation and travel is inspiring.
Sarah Dingus, PE teacher at Viera Elementary School, received an 'Education Award' for her efforts in promoting bicycle and safety education in our schools.
From the moment she was trained in the bicycle/pedestrian curriculum, Sarah has been actively involved in teaching bicycle/pedestrian safety. As she has spent more years of teaching the curriculum she has continued to add more activities. One activity of particular note was her community trail ride. Sarah coordinated with the local police department to join her on the off-campus trail ride with the students. This real-life experience was vital in helping her students better understand the safety guidelines they need to utilize every time they ride.
Rachel Winsten, Brevard Public Schools Resource Teacher K-12: Health, Physical Education Driver Education, & JROTC, received an 'Education Award' for her efforts in promoting bike/ped safety during the pandemic.
When the schools went to remote learning in March 2020, Rachel didn’t let a little inconvenience slow her down. In looking for ways to “virtually” teach PE, she reached out to the Space Coast TPO about bicycle safety resources. Working with curriculum from the Space Coast TPO Kid’s Zone webpage and Florida Safe Routes to School Program, Rachel planned a whole week of bicycle safety lessons and activities. It was no coincidence that bike safety week aligned with National Bike to School Day.

We are asking all BPS parents to take a moment to complete the 2021 Parent Survey.
Your feedback is critical in helping to shape the future of your child's education!
Please complete one survey per grade level for each age group of child that you have in your home. Surveys are available in both English and Spanish.
*This survey is not for charter school parents as those schools create their own tools for parental feedback.

Heart of Brevard - Deputy "Someone"
Fairglen Elementary
|
|
Nominated by Catherine Murphy, Principal
Deputy Vicky Sumlin, our employee of the year, makes a HUGE impact on our campus each and every day. She mentors a plethora of students in a variety of grade levels. She ensures that she is not only building their self-esteem, but also holding them accountable for their academics.
Each grading period she hosts a luncheon for her mentees with good grades. She recently started a book club for some intermediate students where they take a lunch period each week to discuss what they are reading and how it relates to their experiences.
Our students love to spend time with her. She has made such a positive impact on our school. Listening to our littlest learners call her Deputy “Someone” never ceases to warm my heart. She makes our students feel safe, supported, heard, and loved. From a principal’s perspective, team members like Deputy Sumlin are truly an invaluable resource. She goes above and beyond for our students, removing barriers so they can find success.
