Good afternoon Xtra Mile Boston Marathon Team. First of all, the folks here at Special Olympics Massachusetts hope that you and your loved ones have been able to stay safe and healthy.

This is a tough message to send -

As you have likely heard by now, the City of Boston has announced that  the 2020 Boston Marathon has been canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.  Special Olympics Massachusetts is committed to supporting our team to help each of our runners navigate any issues this cancelation will no doubt cause.

We know how much time, energy and resources you have put into preparing, training, and fundraising for this incredible event. And we are devastated for you and your supporters. You have endured more this year than any other runners in the lead up to a marathon and for that, we cannot express our gratitude enough.

Since this news is just breaking, we are still working with our partners to learn what the cancelation means for all of our runners. We will certainly do as much as we can to advocate on your behalf in these conversations.

Here are a few of the questions we will be working on answers for:
  • What happens with any money raised through the marathon program?
  • Will you have access to the race in 2021?
  • Is there an option to transition to another race in 2020? (Since many of you have been training for a marathon for much longer than normal!)
  • What does the virtual option look like?

We will share an update with as many answers as possible next week.

Tom Grilk, the CEO of the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) announced at today's press conference, that there will be a virtual Boston Marathon opportunity that will be run between September 7-14.  As a fundraising partner organization, we will continue to be in contact with both the B.A.A. and John Hancock and will communicate any news about how this change effects our team.

The B.A.A. has shared additional details on their website: When any new information becomes available from the B.A.A. and/or John Hancock, we will be sure to relay it to you ASAP, but in the meantime, if you have any questions in addition to those we are working on, please let us know.
