THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE IRISH CULTURAL CENTRE OF GREATER BOSTON ARE DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE JERRY MCDERMOTT OF BRIGHTON BECOMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR.

After a lengthy and thorough search for a new executive director, Martina Curtin and the ICC board of directors are delighted to announce that just in time for the upcoming March festivities, Jerry McDermott took office as Executive Director on Monday, February 13th 2023.

His timing is auspicious and as the tenth child of John, from Williamstown, County Galway and Mary Connolly, from Drimoleague, County Cork, his provenance is bespoke.

A seasoned business and public affairs professional, with an abundance of political street credit, McDermott brings sound experience as a long time business owner, issues advocate and community liaison to his new role. ICC President, Martina Curtin, heralds his arrival this week… “as a proud first generation Irish American and longtime supporter and promoter of local Irish events, causes, and organizations, Jerry is a natural fit for us. We could not have scripted a more authentic champion. I join the Board in extending Jerry "Fáilté Mór Éireannach" - a warm Irish welcome. We cordially invite our members, supporters, neighbors, GAA partners and fellow Irish organizations to join us at some of our St.Patrick's day festivities in Boston and Canton throughout the next month. We look forward to introducing Jerry to our wholesome Irish American community here in Boston."

Jerry has 30 years of experience in the public, non-profit, and private sectors, as well as on the municipal, county, state, and federal levels of government. Most recently, he served as Chief of Staff at the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM). Prior to being appointed Norfolk County Sheriff, he held positions in Government & Community Relations as well as Economic Development for Eversource Energy.

Jerry also served as the State Director for former United States Senator Scott P. Brown, and as Executive Director of the South Shore Habitat for Humanity. From 2002-2008, he served as a Boston City Councillor, where he chaired the Committees on Ways & Means, and Post Audit & Oversight. Having also served as co-chair of the Allston-Brighton Substance Abuse Task Force, spearheading initiatives in the community to address drug and alcohol issues through education, prevention and awareness such as a Youth Drug Summit, and initiated a Parent Drug Survey used to understand the community’s perspective on substance abuse and mental health issues. During his time on the Boston City Council, he worked with colleagues & state legislators to lead the development of the first sobriety high school, and fought against the overprescribing of opioids. Since becoming Sheriff, he has received extensive training from the National Sheriffs Institute (NSI) and the National Institute of Corrections (NIC). Additionally, having completed the FBI – LEEDA program, where he was a Trilogy Award recipient.

As a graduate of B.A in political science from UMass Boston, Jerry is also the proud dad to two wonderful daughters Aisling, 21 and Rory, 19.

The Irish Cultural Centre are delighted to have Jerry on board and we cannot wait for him to get stuck into to work as we head into Irish Heritage month here in the United States.
