We will share a snapshot of BRHD COVID-19 data each week. This week, we are sharing the total number of positive COVID-19 cases in the District and in each of our localities. Since last Saturday, 715 people have tested positive for COVID in our District. And just yesterday, we saw the highest number of COVID-19 cases in one day that we have had in months. Nearly all of these cases are the highly contagious Delta variant.
Based on what we know now, the vaccines protect against known variants, including the Delta variant. Getting a COVID-19 vaccine is one of the best ways that we can protect ourselves from this virus. Unvaccinated people are 17 times more likely to be hospitalized due to COVID-19. Cases in fully vaccinated people are uncommon. When they do occur, though, current information suggests that fully vaccinated people who do become infected with the Delta variant are at right for transmitting it to others. However, these individuals are likely infectious for a shorter period of time as compared to unvaccinated people. Because the Delta variant is spreading so quickly, we recommend that everyone get vaccinated and wear masks indoors (regardless of vaccination status).

COVID-19 vaccines are working very well to prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death, even against the widely spreading Delta variant. However, with the Delta variant, public health experts are starting to see reduced protection against mild and moderate diseases. For this reason, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is planning for a booster shot so vaccinated people maintain protection over the coming months.
BRHD is unable to provide booster shots until the FDA and CDC approve them. At this time, we are only approved to provide 3rd doses of COVID-19 vaccines to individuals who are immunocompromised that received a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. We will continue to provide updates as they develop regarding the roll out of booster shots.
While there is a lot of talk about booster shots, there are still people who need to get their first dose of a COVID vaccine. Find out about BRHD's free COVID vaccine clinics here

Each week, we introduce you to one of our Health District Heroes so you can get to know the people working to keep you safe and healthy every day. This week, meet Jen Fleisher, BRHD COVID-19 Project Manager and planner.
How long have you been at BRHD?
Since March 2020
What is your job?
I currently help the COVID vaccination, outreach, and testing teams so they can access the resources and information they need to plan and execute successful operations. I also work with the Communications team to create COVID-centric content for all of our media outlets.
Who are you outside of BRHD?
Before BRHD I partnered in a small web and print design company and worked as a birth doula and yoga teacher (I still dabble in all three jobs!). I love to ride my bike with my son and spouse in Charlottesville. I used to play standup bass in the country band Jim Waive & The Young Divorcees. We got to open for a few famous country music folks back in the day (Dwight Yoakam has an incredible wardrobe). Nowadays, I try to get to the beach as much as possible to perfect my longboarding and lighthouse climbing skills.

Remember, vaccination is only one tool to end the pandemic.
We need to use them all in order to return to normal day-to-day activities.
Continue to wear face masks, maintain physical distance, wash hands frequently and properly, and limit indoor social gatherings.
