AwakeningSoul 2020 - a Virtual Gathering
November 5-8

Who is Brian McLaren? He is a …
A Political ActivistBrian is active with Vote Common Good. VCG is inspiring, energizing, and mobilizing people of faith to make the common good their voting criteria and to pursue faith, hope, & love for a change on election day 2020. Brian is coaching candidates on how to connect with and speak authentically to faith motivated voters. He is also providing powerful content through essays and sermons that can be shared with individuals or used for group conversations. Check out his four essay series Dear White Christian Pro-Life Friends and three short sermons on politics, democracy, and voting.

His sermons are a call to action not just to vote for the common good but for continued action beyond the vote: raise your voice, wield your economic power, run for office, protest, and perhaps take risks through civil disobedience. Your action now might just be to share some of these materials with friends and family. He will challenge the AwakeningSoul community to think about next steps.
A Climate Activist – Brian is deeply connected to nature on Marco Island in Florida where he lives. He loves birding and watching all wildlife as he kayaks near his home. This love leads him to fight to reverse the effects that corporations, farming, and humankind are having on creation. He has led pilgrimages to the Galapagos Islands and his most recent book is The Galapagos Islands; A Spiritual Journey.

Brian has written Maybe When We’re Gone a starkly beautiful song about where our planet is headed. Fran McKendree and Lindsey Blount have recorded it for our 2020 gathering. Click on their photo to listen.
A Contemplative – Brian is on the faculty of The Living School at the Center for Action and Contemplation. In his teachings and writings he draws on contemplative practices from all of the world religions. His book Naked Spirituality; A life with God in 12 Simple Words offers accessible, practical wisdom for living a spiritual life. Naked Spirituality is about stripping away the symbols and status of public religion hoping that readers can remove distractions and discover hidden treasure underneath.
A Public Theologian – A prolific writer and speaker, Brian comes back again and again to the Great Commandment – we are called to love God and our neighbors as ourselves. He writes about the web of interconnectedness – the web of mutuality into which we are all woven. He stresses that to get out of the catastrophic situations we find our world in - war, famine, pandemic, raging fires, and hurricanes - that it will take all of us together to bring about the changes that are needed. He is a passionate advocate for “a new kind of Christianity” – just, generous, and working with people of all faiths for the common good.

Brian’s new book Faith After Doubt; Why Your Beliefs Stopped Working and What To Do About It will be published in early 2021. Using his own story and the stories of a diverse group of struggling believers, Brian shows how old assumptions are being challenged in nearly every area of human life, not just theology and spirituality. He proposes a model of faith development in which questions and doubt are not the enemy of faith, but rather a portal to a more mature and fruitful kind of faith.
A Musician/Songwriter – Brian is an incredibly gifted songwriter and composer. It is so important that as theology evolves that the songs we sing in community match our new understanding. It is jarring to hear a wonderfully evocative lecture or homily only to return to a familiar (perhaps well loved) hymn that slams those singing back into the middle ages. Brian is helping to create that new inclusive, expansive, interconnected song book.

The AwakeningSoul Ensemble has recorded many of Brian's pieces. Here is one by Fran McKendree and Lindsey Blount with friend Joanna Hyde. Click on the photo.
A Force for Healing – When you put all of the above together the sum is that Brian is a force for healing in this world and these days we need all of the healing energy we can get. Wherever we find ourselves and our nation on November 5th when we gather, we will be in need of healing. Brian will help lead the way.
