It’s been well over a century since slavery ended, and our promised 40 acres and a mule are still nowhere to be found. But that doesn’t mean people have given up the fight. The push for reparations for Black Americans has picked up steam in the last several years. So buckle up, and we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about reparations.

Juneteenth is a time of reflection and rejoicing — a time of celebration!

Also called Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day, and Emancipation Day, the holiday marks June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger read federal orders in Galveston, Texas, stating that all enslaved people were free.

Here at the South Side YMCA, we’re commemorating this monumental day in history by hosting our annual Juneteenth Celebration and Community BBQ on Saturday, June 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.! Join us as we celebrate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and the achievement of Black Americans, Black history, and Black joy!

This free event will feature youth STEAM activities, games, music, food, and more. All you need to bring is yourself and your family, friends, and neighbors! We encourage attendees to also bring their grills and coolers.

Extra exciting: For the third year in a row, Chicago Culture Gear, a local Black-owned business, is selling their Juneteenth “Freedom Day” and “Flag” t-shirts, with 10% of proceeds supporting South Side YMCA programs and initiatives.

See you there!

Chicago artist Lidell Townsell and gospel icon BeBe Winans are among the artists slated to perform at this year’s Chosen Few Picnic and Festival.

The event returned to an in-person format last year after the pandemic forced organizers to go virtual in 2020. It runs from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, July 8 in Jackson Park, near Hayes and Richards drives.

Townsell is best known for his breakout 1991 hit, “Nu Nu.” Winans is a Grammy-winning gospel singer best known for collaborations with his sister, CeCe, the two releasing several albums before pursuing solo careers.

Headlining the festival will be Chosen Few DJs Wayne Williams, Jesse Saunders, Alan King, Tony Hatchett, Andre Hatchett, Terry Hunter and Mike Dunn. Guest DJs will be spinning as well, including Chicago native and House music pioneer Lori Branch.

Beyond Heaven: Discovering the hidden history of Chicago house music

In Beyond Heaven, Mario Luna and publisher Brandon Johnson collect artwork from more than a decade of Chicago house music history, from the early days of legendary pioneers to lost icons of dance music.

By Terry Matthew

Source: 5mag.net

Beyond Heaven is a series of books that serve as one of the best historical references to the early days of Chicago House Music that we have. Collecting flyers dating back as far as 1981, the books are stuffed with the names of DJ both prominent and obscure and forgotten, and venues that no longer exist outside of a lot and a street address.

Chicago isn’t the best at preserving its history. We tend to grind it up — like melting down old vinyl to make new records that sound worse than the originals. Landmarks in blues, jazz and house history that are as important as the birthplace of Beethoven are now parking lots or anonymous waystations on an Amazon distribution chain. Papers and documents that wind up in the hands of archivists and academics are preserved for the future, but at the cost of accessibility: something that belonged to the street is preserved under glass in places where you must make an appointment just to look at it. It’s just moving from one closet to another. It suffocates.

In Chicago we called our flyers “pluggers.” Maybe some other cities did that too — slang rarely stops at the city limits — but up until just a few years ago that was still a term you heard from printers and promoters when making or taking one for a show. The plugger was made for the street, for being pasted under Chicago’s orange streetlights, slipped under windshield wipers or secreted into rival clubs, high schools and anywhere else the party people might be.

Beyond Heaven takes these artifacts of the street and puts them back on the street — or at least closer in proximity than they’ve been in years. Published as a series of small books that almost anyone can afford, Beyond Heaven is the brainchild of DJ and collector Mario “Liv It Up” Luna and publisher Brandon Johnson of Almighty & Insane Books. You’ve heard of “page turners.” Luna and Johnson have created three books that people simply cannot put down. With minimal explanatory text, the reader plunges into this world — the early days of a new music genre and the rudiments of a culture that was growing around it. Beyond Heaven is also a visual illustration of how a culture grows — the process of house music rolling out of the clubs and into the neighborhoods.

The nationwide attack on Black voters

by Chris Melody Fields Figueredo

A voter drops his ballot in a drop box at Marilyn J. Praisner Community Recreation Center, during Election Day on Nov. 8, 2022, in Burtonsville, Md. Lawmakers in several Democratic-controlled states are pushing sweeping voting protections this year, reacting to what they view as a broader assault on voting rights by the Supreme Court and Republican-led states.

During the 2022 election, one trend was certain: Through ballot measures, voters across the country delivered on critical issues directly affecting our communities. Voters cast ballots in support of reproductive rights, addressing gun violence, the abolition of slavery, increased wages and enhanced voting access — all issues that significantly impact communities of color.

Now, on the heels of these wins, some state politicians and special interests are looking for ways to undermine the will of the people and disenfranchise communities of color.

In a brazen power grab, these politicians are trying to delay — or completely prevent — the implementation of ballot measures that defined November’s midterm elections, and they are taking steps to restrict the use of ballot measures to preemptively reject or void future policy wins. These attacks on ballot measures have been especially prevalent in places where people of color, and Black voters specifically, have used the power of direct democracy to affect change in their communities.

Amendment 4 in Florida is a prime example. In 2018, over 64 percent of Floridians passed Amendment 4 by ballot initiative, effectively approving the restoration of voting rights of 1.4 million formerly incarcerated individuals — predominantly Black voters — who finished their terms of sentence, including parole and probation. Despite sweeping approval at the ballot box, the Florida Legislature responded by introducing new legislative hurdles to delay the implementation of Amendment 4. After years of litigation, confusion remains. Florida officials have no central database to determine who is eligible to vote, and “election police” continue to arrest Florida residents previously deemed eligible to vote by the state.

The racially motivated fallout of Florida’s Amendment 4 is not an isolated incident. In fact, Mississippi, which has the largest Black population of any state in the country, has been a testing ground for restrictions meant to marginalize Black voters and suppress the policy interests of the state’s Black communitee
