Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology

 (Teacher Certification)

Mission and Statement:
Why is our program Special?

We are the only program in the COHP that prepares public school teachers.  We train physical educators to provide healthy and meaningful movement experiences that will enable students to engage in an active lifestyle for the rest of their lives.

Do students in my program have opportunities to conduct research with faculty and present?

The first step in research is a literature analysis.  In our program classes, research is critically analyzed so that students develop the knowledge and tools to appreciate the importance of the scientific base supporting our subject matter and clinical practice (teaching) methods.  A foundation of knowledge and experiences (presentations, discussions, assessments) in considering the research presented in refereed journals is a prerequisite for an understanding and appreciation of the scientific method.  At the undergraduate level, the students benefit most when a literature search is conducted and the research methods and conclusions are critically analyzed in our classes.

Who to Contact?

Who do students contact if difficulties are experienced in major courses?

Although Kinesiology tutors for many of our courses are not provided in our student tutoring and assistance programs, the number one problem students in our program have been poor reading and testing behaviors.  There is help for students who suffer from test anxiety and who would benefit by developing better study habits.  However, many of our students have not developed their testing skills – choosing to avoid written questions, as well as failing to train to overcome their poor reading skills. Student services and Writing center.
