New Bedford, Massachusetts’ Union Street Project:
A Centerpiece of a Great American Downtown
A central corridor in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Union Street has long illustrated the historic story of this beautiful city. As part of the city’s overall revitalization efforts, CDM Smith is partnering with the city to rehabilitate this important corridor. Phase 1 was recently completed, and phase 2 will begin in early 2021. If you’re a railroad enthusiast or interested in iconic New England infrastructure, you’re likely familiar with the Canton Viaduct, also referred to by locals as the “Great Wall of Canton”. Constructed between 1834 and 1835 and designed by Chief Engineer William Gibbs McNeill and George Washington Whistler, the viaduct is believed to be the second oldest multiple-arch masonry viaduct in the U.S. Originally constructed for the Boston and Providence Railroad (B & P), today, the structure supports Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Providence/Stoughton commuter rail line...Read more

Impacts from COVID-19 on Government Affairs – An Update from Government Affairs & Professional Practice Committee Chair AnaCristina Fragoso
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year has been extremely odd in the State and Federal Governments for legislative affairs. Although we still don’t expect to see a lot of movement until a vaccine is developed and distributed, or until COVID-19 risks are significantly reduced, it is expected that government officials will focus on infrastructure as an economic tool to reinvigorate the economy...Read more
