A Message from the Superintendent: Summer Break

Dear District 2 Community,

As we close out the 2025–2026 school year, I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for being ALL IN. What an incredible year it has been!

From our youngest preschool learners to our graduating 8th graders, we have seen tremendous growth, achievement, resilience, and joy across District 2. Together, we celebrated academic successes, artistic talents, athletic accomplishments, and countless moments of kindness and connection that made this year truly special.

To our students, thank you for your hard work, curiosity, and determination. You showed up each day ready to learn, grow, and support one another. We are so proud of all you accomplished this year.

To our families, thank you for your partnership, encouragement, and trust. Your involvement and support play such an important role in the success of our schools and students.

To our teachers and staff, thank you for the care, passion, and dedication you bring each day. Your commitment to creating safe, welcoming, and engaging learning environments makes a lasting difference in the lives of our students.

This year, our ALL IN theme reminded us of the power of community and what can happen when we work together with purpose and heart. Because of your support and collaboration, our district continues to thrive.

As summer begins, I encourage everyone to take time to rest, recharge, and enjoy special moments with family and friends. We look forward to welcoming our students back in the fall for another exciting year of learning and growth.

We are looking forward to being ALL IN for next year. Have a safe, joyful, and relaxing summer!

With warmest regards,

Dr. Katie McCluskey

BSD2 E-Newsletter Earns National Recognition for Communication Excellence

BSD2 is proud to announce that the district has received national recognition from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) in the 2026 NSPRA National School Communication Awards program.

The district earned the Award of Excellence, the highest honor in this category, for its submissions titled “BSD2 E-News: Communication That Builds Community.”

This recognition reflects the intentional work taking place across BSD2 to connect with families, celebrate students and staff, and build trust through strong, consistent communication.

Special congratulations go to our Marketing and Communications Officer, Tania Gomez, whose leadership and dedication made this achievement possible. The BSD2 E-News has grown into a meaningful platform that highlights the incredible learning and accomplishments happening across our schools.

Most importantly, this award belongs to the entire BSD2 community. Every story shared reflects the outstanding work happening in our classrooms and buildings each day.

Thank you to Team BSD2 for making this recognition possible and for continuing to show what it means to be ALL IN!

Congratulations to the BSD2 Class of 2026!

As the school year comes to a close, we celebrate the exciting milestones our students have reached and the new journeys that await them.

Our preschool graduates have taken their first big step and are ready to begin their kindergarten adventure. Our kindergarten students are also moving on to 1st grade, where new opportunities for learning, growth, and discovery await.

We would also like to recognize our 5th-grade students as they prepare to leave elementary school and begin a new chapter at Blackhawk Middle School. This exciting transition marks the start of new experiences, friendships, and opportunities.

And finally, our Blackhawk Middle School students are preparing for their biggest transition yet as they continue their educational journey at Fenton High School. We are incredibly proud of all they have accomplished and look forward to watching them thrive in this next stage of their education.

Each transition represents growth, perseverance, and achievement. We are honored to have been a part of our students’ educational journeys and cannot wait to see all the amazing things they accomplish in the years ahead.

Congratulations to the BSD2 Class of 2026! We wish all of our students and families a safe, fun-filled summer and continued success in the future.

Our PreK students weren’t going to let the K–5 students have all the fun! They also commemorated their promotion to kindergarten this week with mini graduation caps, certificates, and photo backdrops to share with their families.

Our 5th-grade students marked their promotion with a ceremony attended by their families, followed by a dance party!

Finally, our 8th-grade students celebrated their promotion by walking across the stage at Fenton High School and participating in a special walk-out at Blackhawk Middle School.

End-of-Year Celebrations Bring Joy Across Our Elementary Schools

Field Day was a huge success at our elementary schools! Students had a blast participating in a variety of engaging activities that promoted teamwork, movement, and joy. From colorful chalk drawings that brightened the sidewalks to classic games like Duck, Duck, Goose and energetic dance activities, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The laughter, smiles, and school spirit were on full display as students cheered each other on and celebrated the end of a fantastic year of learning and growing together!

Blackhawk 8th Graders Celebrated at Sports Awards Ceremony

On May 21, our Blackhawk 8th-grade athletes were celebrated and recognized during a special Sports Awards Ceremony.

This event highlighted the commitment, teamwork, and sportsmanship demonstrated by our student-athletes across all sports. Coaches took time to reflect on the season, recognizing individual growth, team accomplishments, and the positive attitudes that each athlete brought to their teams.

Students were presented with awards and acknowledgments for their effort, perseverance, and contributions both on and off the field or court.

Congratulations to all of our students who participated in athletics. We look forward to seeing how you continue to grow in the years ahead!

Trimester 3 Reports Available Online Beginning June 2

Trimester 3 reports, including your child’s Spring NWEA MAP report, will be available online beginning tomorrow, June 2, through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. A paper copy of these reports will also be mailed home and should arrive within approximately one week.

In addition, parents of students in 2nd and 5th grade will be able to view their child’s CoGAT results through the Parent Portal.

We highly encourage all families to log in to the Parent Portal to review final grades and assessment reports. The Parent Portal provides quick, convenient access to important student information and is the fastest way to view your child’s reports.

As we prepare to move toward a paperless system for the 2026–2027 school year, this is an excellent opportunity to become familiar with accessing report cards and student reports digitally.

Thank you for your continued support as we work to improve communication and access for BSD2 families.

Summer is here, devices are returning back to their schools, and your kids are about to have something they haven’t had much of during the school year - unstructured free time. It’s only a matter of time before “I’m bored” makes its summer debut, and when it does, it can be hard to know what to do with all that time.  That’s actually a good thing!  Research shows that boredom actually activates the part of the brain responsible for creativity, self-reflection, and planning.  It helps kids develop problem-solving skills, flexibility, and independence.  A child saying they have nothing to do is really just their brain warming up to create something new.

Of course, no one is saying to unplug everything in your house. Tablets, TVs, and smartphones are part of life, and current pediatric guidance focuses less on counting screen time hours and more on what kids are doing on screens, when they are using them, and how it fits into the rest of their day. Even just a little bit of device-free time each day can go a long way - and it doesn’t need to be anything planned.  A bike ride, a board game, a water balloon fight, building something weird out of cardboard – or just sitting outside and enjoying the sunshine.  Studies have found that kids who spend more time outdoors show improved memory, stronger social skills and better emotional regulation.  All from just being outside and playing.

The best part? These don’t have to be big plans – even small moments of unplugged time can make a difference.  Here are some ideas to get the summer started:

  • Get outside: Neighborhood walks, bike rides, gardening, making sidewalk chalk art, or get creative and set up an outdoor obstacle course!
  • Make something: Build a fort, start a sketchbook, try a new recipe, or tackle a DIY project.
  • Get playing: Board games, card games, puzzles, Lego challenges, or invent a brand new game with made-up rules.
  • Get exploring: Visit your local library, check out a new park, or go on a nature walk.
  • Get bored on purpose: Set aside an afternoon with zero agenda and see where it goes.

However you spend the summer, we hope your family finds time to unplug, get outside, and make some memories that don't need a charger. Have a wonderful break!
