From a design challenge rendering art inspired by Alma Thomas to a Living Museum showcasing the diverse lives and experiences of influential leaders, our students have explored history, creativity, and culture in meaningful ways.

At Bensenville School District 2, we are proud to celebrate diversity and honor the contributions of leaders throughout history. Thank you to all our students, staff, and families for helping make this month a celebration of learning, creativity, and culture!

Blackhawk Middle School Students Shine in Shrek Jr. The Musical

Our Blackhawk Middle School students have been working tirelessly to bring the beloved story of Shrek Jr. to the stage! From singing and dancing to acting and set design, these students have poured their creativity and energy into an unforgettable performance.

We invite all families and community members to mark their calendars and join us for this magical musical experience. Performances will take place on March 20, 21, and 22 at Blackhawk Middle School.

This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the hard work of our students and enjoy a night of fun, laughter, and entertainment. You won’t want to miss it!

Johnson Elementary School Shows Its Heart!

Johnson Elementary School truly has a lot of heart! This year, over 200 students and staff participated in the Kids Heart Challenge, raising funds for the American Heart Association. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, our school raised an amazing $14,261 to help combat heart disease.

A special shout-out goes to our top three fundraisers (pictured above):

  • Adalyn Trewarn – $876
  • McKenna De Peralta – $687
  • Rosio Corson – $565

Beyond fundraising, students had a blast jumping rope and learning valuable tips for keeping their hearts healthy. It was a fun and meaningful way for our school community to come together, make a difference, and support a lifesaving cause.

Way to go, Johnson!

District 2 Summer School & Enrichment Programs Now Announced

Traditional Summer School Program

District 2 will once again offer a free traditional summer school program. This program will provide select students focused support in furthering their progress in reading and math. This support will assist students in being more prepared for their upcoming grade levels.

In addition to reading and math instruction, the traditional summer school program will also feature a period of enrichment for students built into the program to enjoy each day.

This year, summer school is from Monday, July 6th, through Thursday, July 23, at W.A. Johnson School. Classes will meet from 8-11:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

Families of students who have been identified to receive the summer school programming will be notified during parent-teacher conferences on Friday, February 20. The deadline to register for summer school is Wednesday, March 18.

Summer Enrichment Program

The District will also offer a slate of free enrichment activities that is open to all students who aren’t identified for traditional summer school. This enrichment program will allow students in grade-level groupings to participate in rotations of fun, engaging summer enrichment activities each day.

The summer enrichment program coincides with traditional summer school, running from 8-11:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday at W.A. Johnson School, beginning July 6 and ending July 23rd.

Registration for summer enrichment will open Monday, March 2, and will be conducted on a first-come-first-served basis. The deadline to register online is Wednesday, March 18.

IAR Testing is Coming — Here's How You Can Help Your Student Succeed!

March is IAR Month! This spring, students in Grades 3–8 will be taking the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) - the state's official assessment for English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) and Mathematics. The BSD2 2026 IAR testing window runs from March 2 through March 20th!

What is the IAR?

The IAR measures how well students are meeting the Illinois Learning Standards in reading, writing, and math. It's designed to show whether students are on track for the next grade level and building the skills they'll need for college and careers. Results are reported using four performance levels: Above Proficient, Proficient, Approaching Proficient, and Below Proficient.

How Can Families Help?

You don't need to be a test-prep expert to make a big difference for your child! Here are some simple, effective ways to support your student during testing season:

  • Keep routines consistent. Make sure your child is getting a good night's sleep and eating a healthy breakfast on testing days. Being rested and nourished makes a real difference in focus and performance.
  • Stay positive and calm. Your attitude about testing matters! Reassure your student that the IAR is just one way to show what they know, and encourage them to do their best without putting undue pressure on themselves.
  • Review practice items together. The Illinois Student Readiness Tool and practice tests let students explore the types of questions they'll see on test day so there are no surprises.
  • Read every day. Even 20 minutes of independent reading helps build the comprehension and vocabulary skills tested in ELA.
  • Talk about math in real life. Encourage your child to think through everyday math problems — at the grocery store, in recipes, or during sports — to reinforce reasoning skills.
  • Send your student to school with a fully charged Chromebook every day. During testing season, students use their Chromebooks to complete assessments. When a device arrives uncharged, it can interrupt your child’s test and create extra work for their teacher to troubleshoot in the middle of instruction. A simple nightly routine, plugging in the Chromebook before bed, makes a big difference for the whole classroom.
  • On Testing Days, Remember:
  • Arrive at school on time
  • Get a good breakfast
  • Charge your Chromebook the night before: a fully charged device means no interruptions during testing!
  • Leave the stress at the door, you've got this!

We are proud of every student and know they have been working hard all year. This is simply a chance to show it!
