FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Introducing Right At School, our new elementary after-school program provider

Dear Elementary Parents and Guardians,

As you know we have had after school programming provided to our schools through Frida Kahlo from the 21st Century Grant. This grant and programming will be ending in June. The district has been researching other after school programming options for the 2023-24 school year. We are excited to announce that the nationally recognized after school student enrichment program provider Right at School is coming to District 2! Beginning with the 2023-2024 school year, Right At School will run the district’s after school programming for Johnson and Tioga schools.

Every day, students that are engaged in the program will have a healthy snack, engage in dynamic fitness activities, student-driven projects, team building, leadership development, and have the opportunity to complete homework. Right at School also features an enriched curriculum in the form of three-week units. Examples of units include “Getting Down to Business,” where students are introduced to money and commerce; “Icky Experiments,” where students experiment with sticky substances to learn chemistry; and “Variety Show,” where students rehearse and perform individual talent acts. We are excited to join other local school districts in partnering with Right at School to provide this exciting program to our families.

The Right at School program will run after school until 6:00 p.m. 5 days a week for kindergarten through 5th graders. Families that are interested in registering for this program are asked to commit to 5 days a week. The program will be free to families for the next school year due to State Relief funding provided to lessen the student achievement gaps due to COVID.

Right at School is hosting an in-person “Family Information Night” on Tuesday, May 23rd at 6:00 pm at Tioga School in the cafeteria. A Spanish interpreter will be available at the meeting. Your children are welcome to attend. We will have supervision for students in the gym during the presentation. The presentation will provide an overview of its program, answer questions and provide Right at School the opportunity to learn more about the District 2 community. However, if you prefer to join virtually the link is below:

WELCOME TO DISTRICT 2

Meet a new member of the District's Community Relations team

Meet Gabriela Escobar, our new Bilingual Community Relations Assistant.

Gaby is teaming up with Tim Waldorf, our Community Relations Coordinator, to improve our connection with our families that speak languages other than English. Together, they will be working to ensure that our communications are linguistically sound and culturally aware.

Gaby's a native Spanish speaker, born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico. She moved to the United States 20 years ago, and comes to us with a decade of experience working in schools as a parent liaison. She will be creating consistent, high-quality Spanish versions of the English communications we share across the District, and providing simultaneous translation services for select District and school events. Also, she will often be attending community events and reaching out to parents in order to make important personal connections with our families of language backgrounds other than English.

Please welcome Gaby; she is here to help and listen to you if you need it. Her phone number is 630-766-5940 ext. 1115, or you can send an email to the account: gescobar@bsd2g.org.

BSD2 E-FLYERS

Here are the current community flyers posted on the District's website

District 2 has gone "green" in its approach to distributing community flyers.

Rather than sending flyers home with each student via backpack mail, District and community flyers are posted on the BSD2 E-Flyers page for parents to view or print 24/7.

It is estimated that this saves our schools hundreds of hours per year spent sorting and handling the materials, not to mention the number of trees and other resources saved in producing them.
