BSD2 Honors Hispanic Heritage Month

As Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15) ends, we are proud to reflect on the many ways BSD2 teachers and students came together to celebrate and honor Hispanic cultures.

Throughout the month, classrooms were filled with learning and creativity. Students explored the rich histories and traditions of various Hispanic cultures through research projects, hands-on activities, and engaging lessons. They created vibrant crafts inspired by cultural art forms, and the hallways came alive with colorful decorations that reflected the spirit and diversity of Hispanic heritage.

In alignment with our celebration of culture and diversity, our district is proud to launch the Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools (FLES) program, beginning this year with first grade. This exciting initiative expands language learning opportunities for all students and lays the foundation for future global readiness.

The FLES program will expand by one grade level each year, helping students grow as confident communicators and curious learners!

Tioga Elementary Celebrates Cultures from Around the World at International Night

On October 8th, Tioga Elementary School opened its doors for a special evening of global discovery during its annual International Night! The event welcomed students and their families to take part in an immersive cultural experience celebrating the rich diversity of the school community.

Upon arrival, attendees received “passports” and were invited to travel from classroom to classroom, with each room representing a different country. This year, Tioga showcased the vibrant cultures of Bolivia, Guatemala, Mexico, Ukraine, and Poland.

It was a night filled with learning, connection, and pride!

Halloween Costumes, Student Gift Giving, and Trick or Treating Safety Tips

Halloween is fast approaching! To promote a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for every student, please take a moment to review the district’s guidelines on costumes and gift giving.

  • COSTUMES: Students are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes to school. Remember, though, that face paint, fake blood and look-alike weapons are prohibited. Halloween masks should not be worn throughout the regular school day, only during costume parades.

  • ALTERNATE ACTIVITIES: Parents who do not want their child to participate in Halloween celebrations should send a note to their child’s teacher as soon as possible. Students not celebrating will be in an alternative location, engaged in non-Halloween related activities.

In addition to our school-specific guidelines, here are some general Halloween safety tips for families celebrating after school hours:

  • Be seen: Add reflective tape or glow sticks to costumes or treat bags, and carry flashlights while trick-or-treating.
  • Stay with a group: Children should always go trick-or-treating in groups and stay with a trusted adult.
  • Check treats: Make sure an adult checks all treats before they’re eaten. Discard anything unwrapped or suspicious.
  • Stick to sidewalks: Walk, don’t run, and use sidewalks or designated paths whenever possible. Cross streets at corners or crosswalks.
  • Costume safety: Make sure costumes are well-fitting to avoid tripping, and that masks don’t block vision.

Important Notice for Parents: Report Card & Progress Report Schedule — 2025-26

We want to share some important information about our upcoming report card cycle for the 2025-26 school year, especially a change in how progress reports will be delivered. Our goal is to help you stay up to date on how your child is doing throughout the year and to improve our communication with families.

What’s New

  • This year, all elementary progress reports will be uploaded to the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Middle School parents should continue to check the gradebook for the latest academic updates.
  • We are preparing to move away from paper-based progress reports and report cards. This means you will be able to see Progress Reports and Report Cards online via the portal. We hope this makes accessing your child’s information more timely, convenient, and environmentally friendly.

Key Dates for Trimester I, 2025-26

  • November 14, 2025: End of Trimester I

FREE Developmental Screenings for Ages 3–5

Do you have a child between the ages of 3 and 5? Ensure they're ready for kindergarten by signing up for a free developmental screening! Your child must be 3 years old by the screening date, and an appointment is required. Screenings take about one hour.

What’s Included:

Professionals will assess:

  • Large & fine motor skills
  • Pre-academic readiness
  • Speech, language, vision & hearing

These screenings help:

  • Identify eligibility for District’s free preschool program
  • Detect needs for additional support before kindergarten

Children already attending the District’s preschool have already been screened.

Screenings provide a snapshot of a child’s development—covering motor, cognitive, and language skills—to ensure they’re meeting typical milestones

Why It Matters:

  • About 1 in 7 children experience developmental delays, and only 20–30% are identified before school entry.
  • Early screening allows early intervention, leading to improved school performance, social skills, and lifelong success.

2025–2026 Screening Calendar:

  • October 22
  • December 5
  • February 19
  • May 29

Ready to Schedule?

Call Tioga School at 630‑766‑2602 ext. 4175 to make an appointment.

Together, we can help every child grow, thrive, and start school off strong!
