Vision & Hearing Screenings Begin the Week of September 21
Starting the week of September 21, BSD2 will begin conducting annual vision and hearing screenings for eligible students.
Good vision and hearing are essential to a child’s success in school. Because children may not always realize they are having difficulty seeing or hearing, screenings can help identify potential concerns early and connect families with additional evaluation or support when needed.
Who Will Be Screened?
In accordance with Illinois requirements:
Hearing screenings are provided for preschool students age 3 and older; students in kindergarten and Grades 1, 2, and 3; students receiving special education services; students referred by a teacher; and transfer students.
Vision screenings are provided for preschool students age 3 and older; students in kindergarten and Grades 2 and 8; students receiving special education services; students referred by a teacher; and transfer students.
If your child has received a qualifying hearing or eye examination within the previous 12 months, you may provide the completed and signed documentation to your school nurse in place of the required screening.
Parents or legal guardians may object to vision or hearing screenings on religious grounds by submitting a written and signed statement to the school.
What Happens After the Screening?
Families will only be contacted if their child’s screening results meet the criteria for a referral. A referral means that further evaluation by an appropriate healthcare provider is recommended; the school screening itself is not a diagnosis.
If your child receives a referral and your family experiences financial barriers to scheduling a follow-up appointment, please contact your school nurse. We are happy to help connect families with available resources and support.
Thank you for helping us make sure our students are ready to see, hear, learn, and succeed!
