Congratulations on completing the Fall 2019 semester!
While winter break is a time to relax and spend time with loved ones, the extended time-off can be a great opportunity to research and apply for summer research programs, scholarships and other funding opportunities, post-baccalaureate training programs, and more.
Please explore this digest for several opportunities you may wish to look into further this winter break.

The UMD BSOS Summer Research Initiative (SRI) program is designed to encourage and enhance the diversity of scholars working in the social and behavioral science fields.
In 2020, the program will bring students to the University of Maryland, College Park campus for eight weeks for a full-time, paid, residential research experience. Participants will work side-by-side with a faculty mentor on a guided research project, attend weekly seminars, and visit local professional associations. Finally, students will present their work at a poster session at the end of the program.

arrive on Saturday, May 30, 2020 for a mandatory summer orientation)

The Institute for Broadening Participation's (IBP) website offers a variety of resources with the mission of increasing diversity in STEM. IBP has compiled a repository of summer research programs across a variety of fields based all across the country. Most of these programs offer a stipend, housing, and travel support.

The African American Mayors Association Future Leaders Fellowship (FLF) Program is an eight-week, paid program which offers selected undergraduate students an opportunity to learn and navigate the functions of local government. The program consists of a four-week extensive training at the AAMA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. followed by a deployment to an Association’s member mayors office for a hands on career building experience.

Do you have an outstanding academic record? Do you have a high degree of financial need?
The Beinecke Scholarship Program provides graduate study scholarships in the humanities and social sciences to JUNIORS of exceptional, demonstrated academic ability who have a
high degree of financial
need as demonstrated by the FAFSA process.
The deadline to submit a complete draft of the Beinecke application to be considered for a nomination is 1/17/2020.

The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides opportunities for University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) undergraduates to spend much of the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research, scholarly, or artistic projects. The MSS program provides awards of $3,000 to approximately 25-30 undergraduates each summer.
The deadline to apply for summer 2020 awards will be Thursday, February 13, 2020. It is important that candidates begin developing their proposals as soon as possible. Contact us at

You can help make a difference for kids!
America Reads*America Counts*Partners in Print is a mentoring/tutoring program where more than 200 UMD students work weekly to improve the literacy and math skills of Prince George’s County Title 1 elementary school students.
We are seeking dedicated and enthusiastic college students who love working with kids and want to give back to their community. America Reads*America Counts*Partners in Print is a great way to meet new friends on campus, develop essential leadership skills, and gain valuable resume-building experience!
We are currently recruiting for each of our programs. Students can volunteer, receive academic or internship credit, or, if eligible for Federal Work Study, can be paid to work with our program! Don’t know if you have Federal Work Study? Check your Financial Aid package at
