CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY TAKES STEP FORWARD ON MENTAL WELLNESS AT BTEA SAFEBUILD

NYS Governor Hochul addresses SAFEBUILD Forum – “I applaud you.”

The critical importance of addressing mental health and wellness in the construction industry was the focus of the 2023 BTEA SAFEBUILD Forum, held June 22 at Club 101 in New York City. Sharing the message, “It’s OK to not be OK,” BTEA welcomed wellness experts and industry stakeholders to discuss best practices and available resources to help employers support workers and create safer workspaces. Governor Kathy Hochul opened the Forum, praising BTEA for its focus on mental health, sharing information and resources and “confronting the stigma of asking for help. President and CEO Elect Elizabeth Crowley with BTEA Safebuild Award Winners

BTEA closed out SAFEBUILD with the presentation of this year’s Safety Awards. The Best Practices and Safety Culture honor went to Hunter Roberts Construction Group, recognized for its new Risk Mitigation Plan for specialty contractors. Paul Mosley, General Superintendent of Five Star Electric Corp., accepted the Safety Innovation Award. The firm’s adoption of safety app technology has helped reduce OSHA recordable and lost time injuries and produced safer job sites. Congratulations to Ed Madigan for receiving the Hardhat Safety Award! Finally, the Google Martha Project, a joint venture of Structure Tone and Turner Construction Company, won BTEA’s Project Safety Award. Google Martha has the lowest recordable incident/injury rate in the global Google construction portfolio. Congratulations to the winners!

CITY COUNCIL SPEAKER ADAMS MEETS WITH BTEA MEMBERS

On June 20, the BTEA welcomed New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams to its office. Members had the opportunity to get to know the Speaker and engage in a productive discussion on the value union contractors bring to the City’s growth and well-being. Adams represents the 28th district in Queens, which includes Jamaica, Rochdale Village, Richmond Hill and South Ozone Park. She is the third woman and the first African American to serve as Speaker of the Council.

AMERICAN GLOBAL AND BTEA DISCUSS ADR AND SOARING INSURANCE COSTS

High insurance costs are a daunting challenge for BTEA members and the construction industry. On June 28, BTEA’s Insurance Task Force conducted an informative online meeting with representatives from American Global.
