All 2025 Contractor Members, their employees and respective family members are able to apply for a 2025 scholarship for full-time study at the accredited post-secondary undergraduate institution of the student’s choice. All applications must be submitted online or postmarked by June 30, 2025.

Earlier this month, Tom Flynn, General Vice President of the UBC, announced his retirement. A proud member of Local 327 and former Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the NASRCC, Tom has long been recognized as a respected leader in our industry. Downtown Plan Ready for Decision Day
The BPDA is expected to vote on the downtown rezoning plan at their July meeting. That would clear the way for final approval by the Zoning Commission in August. Supporters say encouraging high-rise development in Downtown Crossing and the Financial District will ease the housing crisis, fill vacant storefronts and head off a potential fiscal cliff related to declining tax revenues from rising office vacancies. Opponents warn of damage to historic sites, increased shadows on Boston Common and an influx of high-end luxury housing.

Mass. Convention Center Authority is betting $100M on future of the Hynes
The MA Convention Center Authority is expected to invest approximately $100M in upgrades over the next five years. The upgrades will largely go to HVAC redevelopment, systems upgrades and replacing certain features like old carpeting.

OSHA’s proposed cuts won’t affect enforcement: DOL chief
While OSHA cuts are the center of much debate, Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer told congressional leaders that a slimmed-down OSHA would be just as effective as the current version in keeping the country’s workers safe and the decrease in staff may actually help modernize the department.

SuperNova Officially Signs Landmark Community Benefits & PLA for Tough Tech Campus Expansion
Fueled by the Arts & Innovation Subarea zoning, Somernova’s expansion envisions 1.5M SF of cutting-edge R&D and commercial space and housing to support the next wave of climate and tough tech innovators. The PLA has been signed with the Greater Boston Building Trades Unions, the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, and Shawmut Design and Construction.
1 Joslin Place Hospital Approved
The existing Joslin Diabetes Center Building will be demolished, and a new14-story building will be constructed. It is anticipated to contain approximately 300 inpatient beds and 20 observation beds for Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), together with clinical support space on lower floors for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a below-grade inpatient imaging department for DFCI and a below-grade garage containing approximately 250 accessory vehicle parking spaces.
BU - Pardee School of Global Studies Approved
The BPDA recently approved BU's proposal to transform an existing 56K SF surface parking lot into the Fredrick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, a 70K SF academic building with approximately 50K of open space at 250 Bay State Road.

With an initial heat trigger at 80 degrees and additional control measures at 90 degrees, OSHA’s proposed regulations would significantly increase employer compliance obligations, requiring businesses to develop comprehensive plans to evaluate and manage heat risks. OSHA’s hearings began on June 16 and are currently scheduled through July 2, 2025.

- Gilbane has hired former Turner Construction executive Suzanne Bennett to lead its new procurement subsidiary focused on equipment sourcing.
- Beth Israel, the 2nd largest private employer in MA, has named a new DEI chief while also sharing the company will be making an "organizational shift" from DEI to community impact.
- UMASS Memorial recently shared its intention with the State DOH to build a proton therapy center at its Marlborough campus with the goal of purchasing a $53.5M proton beam. This would make them the 2nd hospital in NE to offer this type of treatment.
- The CEO of Global Partners, the 5th largest public company in MA, continues to fight for the Mass Pike Service Plaza job after it was awarded to an Irish Firm, Applegreen. Slikfa noted the approximate $900M in revenue that would be generated by awarding the contract in the state of MA. Gov. Healey would need to step in to reverse any decisions.
- 30% of executives in a recent PWC survey state they have paused deals over tariff-related economic uncertainty.
- The MA unemployment rate reached 4.8% in May, up 0.2% from the revised April figure of 4.6%. In contrast, the U.S. unemployment rate in May was 4.2%, where it's been since March. This marks the 5th straight month of increases for MA.
- 14% - the YOY rise in enrollment at MA Community Colleges.
- A New York-based federal judge extended until next Wednesday his order temporarily blocking the US Department of Labor from shutting down its Job Corps training program for low-income young adults.
