Fed Raises Rates as Construction Costs Continue to Climb

The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage points on Sept. 16, its first increase since 2023. For the construction industry, higher borrowing costs could make some projects less financially viable, potentially delaying or preventing new commercial developments from moving forward. The rate increase also comes as nonresidential construction input prices remain elevated, rising 8.9% year over year in August. While higher rates may eventually help bring down longer-term borrowing costs, continued inflation in materials and labor is adding to the financial pressure facing contractors, owners and developers.
