13th Annual Black & Gold Golf Classic
Will Honor the Student/Partner Alliance
| | |
The Student/Partner Alliance (S/PA) is a partner to the students it supports, but it is also a partner to the schools those students attend. To Hudson Catholic, the S/PA provides well over six figures in tuition assistance per year to ~40 Hawk students, along with mentoring support and special events and services aimed at boosting them into college and careers.
In the late 1980s, Tom Cash, an American Express executive, provided tuition assistance to 10 students in Jersey City at St. Mary's High School, recognizing that students attending quality college preparatory schools in their own communities were better prepared for college admission and scholarships. As friends and business partners heard about Tom's efforts, they wanted to help too, adding both tuition assistance and mentoring to the vision.
The Student/Partner Alliance was formally incorporated in 1993. Since then, the 'S/PA' has been supporting students at urban Catholic high schools throughout northern New Jersey with financial aid and mentoring support for 33 years. Tom Cash remains in service to the S/PA today, as its Chairman of the Board.
In the early days, the S/PA started by recruiting other corporate executives to provide the tuition assistance that it offerered to students. Today, in addition, nearly three dozen foundations and corporations pitch in with generous funding for the S/PA mission.
Over the past 33 years, the S/PA has granted 2,500 scholarships, with 99% of recipients going on to college admissions, post-secondary schooling, or armed services. This past year, the S/PA supported 173 students with mentoring and $630,000 in scholarships.
Along with providing mentoring support, the S/PA awarded $121,000 in financial aid to 40 Hawk students in 2025-26, including nine seniors and, since 2013, has supported 91 graduates and current Hawks with $910,000 in 364 separate awards. In 2026-27, the S/PA is committed to providing $3,500 in tuition assistance per student to 37 students who will be graduating from 2027 through 2030. That is a commitment of $129,500 for this coming year alone, making the Student/Partner Alliance the largest benefactor to Hudson Catholic!
Hudson Catholic is ever grateful for the long-running support of our Hawks by the Student/Partner Alliance and all of its stakeholders and supporters. Honoring the S/PA at the Black & Gold Golf Classic on October 19th with the John P. Higgins Award represents a public expression of our continuing appreciation. This award is given to those who have had significant impact on Hudson Catholic, reflective of John's life and values centered around engagement in school life and support of its students.
Editor's Note: The people who make it go! The Student/Partner Alliance is led by Executive Director Ms. Kristin Shannon, having succeeded, in January 2025, Ms. Margaret Momber, who ran the organization for 12 years. The President of the S/PA Board of Trustees is Mr. Emmett Daly, Retired Managing Director - Piper Sandler & Co. And, our own Quincy Slay '19, himself a recipient of S/PA awards as a Hawk student, has been an S/PA Board member since 2023.

Welcome to The Hawk Community!
Katie Dombrowski
Joins the Advancement Team
| | |
President-Principal Terry Matthews and Chief Advancement Officer Gary Ferrari '73 are pleased to announce the arrival of Ms. Katie Dombrowski, who joins the Office of Advancement as Manager - Advancement. In her role,Katie will support Hudson Catholic's efforts to strengthen alumni engagement, communications, and giving.
Katie brings nearly two decades of experience in education, with a career spanning teaching, educational publishing and technology, marketing, and communications. Her most recent role was as Director - Marketing & Communications at The Center for Education Market Dynamics. Prior to that, Katie was a Senior Manager of Product Marketing at A-Z Learning.
Katie is a Catholic school product, through and through, from grammar school through graduate school. Originally from central Jersey, she attended Bishop George Ahr High School, now St. Thomas Aquinas, in Edison, and went on to become a Hawk for the first time, at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, earning Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Education, the latter with focus as a Literacy Specialist. She began her career as a teacher at St. Francis Cabrini Catholic School in Piscataway in 2008-2009.
Katie and her husband and family live in Jersey City and are already friends with some Hudson Catholic alumni and our own Ms. Sarah Barbi.
In her role, Katie will lead the build-out of digital capabilities aimed at mobile messaging communications with alumni and friends, and providing our existing and new donors with payment capabilities among digital wallets and P2P platforms. She will play a significant role in our outreach to classes among Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z, communicating with them and meeting them where they live and work on social media and in digital commerce.
CAO Gary Ferrari had this to offer alumni and friends about Katie: "Katie D. is a very capable, engaging and enthusiastic professional whose skills and personality make her a great addition to the Hudson Catholic mission. I encourage all alumni and donors to welcome her warmly into the Hudson Catholic family. Katie has my full support in the activities she will be asked to lead. She is part of the future of Hudson Catholic Advancement."

Hawks at the Shore
Gathering returns for Sixth Year Running!
| | Over 50 Hawks gathered for the 6th Annual Hawks at The Shore gabfest at the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh Club in Belmar on August 15th. The Don Wuelfing Room, named for the club member and '69 Hawk, is home field for this event since its inception in 2021. Bobby Quirk '73 was our gracious host as usual. Special thanks to Steve Liptak '69 for coming forward to provide the event sponsorship to underwrite this year's swag - a handsome throwback golf shirt containing the large 'H' insignia accompanied by a flying hawk. Also a shout-out to Bill Drewes '69 who came all the way form Palm Beach, FL to win the 50-50 raffle and turn back all $500 to the school. Quite a guy, that Bill. Then again, he's a Hawk! See you all next year, down the shore! | | Donors Make for Our Best Appeals | | |
Apparently, the "In The Words of a Donor'" feature from our last issue must have struck a chord with another alumni donor, who took the time to send a note along with their year-end gift that said: "Being able to give back to the school that built us is a blessing."
There are times when we let a donor speak for us, as their words of appeal just cannot be topped from our office.

Hawk Science Ruled the County!
| | |
In 1986, our Hawks produced the County Championship Science Team for the third consecutive year in the annual New Jersey State Science Competition. It's documented for posterity in the archives of our beloved hometown newspaper, the Jersey Journal. Immortalized therein are Dr. Vikas Passi '86, Electrical Engineer Stanley Pietrowicz, Dr. Armughan Khan, and Dr. Vivek Videhra '87. The proud Hawk Science Faculty of the day included Hall of Famer Brother Patrick King, FSC, Sister Eleanor Ustach, Sister Kathleen McHugh, Mrs. Angela DeBellis, and our now-longest serving Faculty member in school history, Hall of Famer Phil Gazzale.
Upon polling the members, we learned there were actually three teams and the '86 team was larger than just the individuals named in the article. Stan Pietrowicz was selected to the Hawk team in '84 as a sophomore and continued for the next two years, as the Hawk Science Team won three years in a row for Hudson County, and Stan won the Individual Hudson County Championship twice for Chemistry and once in Physics.
Commentator staff Tony Maimone '86 and Luis Estebenez '87, captured the atmosphere of the time, in 1985, by opening their article with this passage: "When it comes to learning high school science in Hudson Country, you can't beat Hudson Catholic. That's not an opinion. It's a fact!"
From that article, we learned that 15 Hawk students were divided into teams of five, to be tested in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. First place Chem contained five juniors ('86ers), as did the Biology team, and Physics offered five seniors: Albert Assad '85, Tom Bertolini '85, Fernando Estrems '85, Pete Koch '85, and John Roefaro '85.
| | This yearbook photo of the '85 Team contains students and faculty: Front: L. to R.: Raid Sawaged '86, Vikas Passi '86, Stan Pietrowicz '86, Paul Baham '86, Anthony Maimone '86, Sister Kathleen. Back, L. to R.: Brother Pat, Sister Eleanor, Chetan Amin '86, Nick Flintosh, Rich Kanski '86, Mike DeGennaro '86, Lou Castagno '87, Mr. Gazzale. | | L. to R.: Chetan Amin '86, Rich Kanski, 86, Stan Pietrowicz '86, Mike DeGennaro '86, Paul Baham '86, Rob Radvanski '86. | | |
The beginning of the school year is always an amazing transition period at 790 Bergen Ave. There’s the anticipation of a new year with new staff and new students. There’s a freshness and an excitement to it all. However, there’s also that bittersweet feeling of loss as we said goodbye to students who had been with us for four years, as well as some staff who have moved on to other things. There is a “Circle of Life” existence that is high school.
We welcome 120 new Hawks to campus in this, the Class of 2030. That’s right…2030!!! The date is staggering when I look at it in print, but it also fills me with pride to know that Hudson Catholic continues to educate young men and women from all walks of life in a faith-filled Lasallian environment that opens doors to opportunity for each and every one of them.
Our school stands at a wonderful moment in its history. At the end of this year, we will officially be reaffiliated with the De La Salle Christian Brothers, the first school in history to accomplish that feat. We are truly blessed.
On the financial front, I will never be able to thank our alumni, our families, our friends and our students for all you have done to support Hudson Catholic. When I assumed the role of President-Principal six years ago, I was stunned to learn that we had over $2,000,000 in historical debt on our ledgers. We didn’t pass anyone’s institutional health test. Through careful stewardship, the incredible outreach of our Advancement Office, the generosity and love of our alumni and friends, and, yes, the support and belief of the Archdiocese of Newark, I am happy to say that Hudson Catholic ended the 2026 school year with ZERO debt!
As people continue to invest their time, talent and treasure into Hudson Catholic, they now do so with the knowledge that they are investing in a school positioned for long-term health and success. If a donor asks to view our books before making an investment, they will see a school that is fiscally sound. We already send our students to the best colleges and universities in the country. We already have amazing student-athletes and thespians. We already have mission-driven faculty and students who know it is their responsibility to make the world a better place. Now we need to take that next step and build for the future so that Hudson Catholic will always be there opening doors to success for tomorrow’s young people.
In this issue of the BTL, our CAO, Gary Ferrari, announces the appointment of Ms. Katie Dombrowski to the position of Advancement Manager. I am excited that we are now in a position to build out our Advancement Office. Gary Ferrari has done a tremendous job as a one-man show. I can’t wait to see us soar even higher with Katie Dombrowski on board.
The Hawks of Hudson Catholic continue to fly high. Now we enter a new school year positioned to fly even higher! For the Hawks, the sky is, quite literally, the limit!

Kudo's for St. Pete's!
Our College Program partner in the Dual Degree Program, St. Peter's University, has just received recognition as one of only 12 of New Jersey's 96 colleges and universities rated 4-Stars-or-higher in the Money Magazine list of 'Best Colleges in America'. And, on Time Magazine's very first list of America's Best Colleges for 2026-2027, St. Pete's has been recognized both as a top-3 private university and ranked 7th overall in the state of New Jersey. And among all universities nationally, St. Peter's ranks in the upper tier of all institutions.
| | In the last issue, and in social media since, we were banging the drum to try to find a female mentor for an incoming female freshman receiving support from the Student/Partner Alliance. We are happy to report that not one, but two, of our Hawk alumnae stepped up to express interest in the role. We are happy to report that all of our S/PA Hawks for the coming year have mentors. | | "Good mentors do not create followers. They create other mentors. That is how influence scales. Without ego. Without noise. Without control." -- Joe Slota '72, author of From the Streets to Global Seats and The Uncoded Advantage. | | |
Football Underway
Well, our Hawks' season debut was unsuccessful, going down to Irvington, 40-8 but, fear not, Coach Holman is still implementing his system and style of play. So, come on out and root for our guys this fall!

Med Creds. Shriya Patel '21 is a Master of Public Health candidate at Rutgers Graduate School of Public Health and working as a Medical Lab Technician at Quest Diagnostics in Clifton. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Medical Humanities/ Pre-Med Studies from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.
| | |
Go Pro! Anasia 'Nay' Staton '20, formerly of Florida Gulf Coast University, and Towson University before that, has signed a professional contract to play basketball in Portugal this fall. She will be living and playing in Villa Nova de Gaia, a major municipality in northern Portugal located directly across the Duoro River from Porto. Her team will be Sporting Clube Coimbroes. We will keep you posted on her exploits as the season gets underway.

Talented, and with an Eye for Talent. Kaylin Warren '16, Senior Talent & Influencer Manager at Team Epiphany in Jersey City, marked her third year working on the Coca Cola Company's ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans, and her first year leading all talent partnerships -- Coca Cola, Simply, and Smartwater -- across the program and at the Superdome and Convention Center.

Promoting Law Enforcement. Lt. Dan Niekrasz '07 of the Bloomfield, NJ Police Dept. has initiated Lighthouse Law Enforcement Consulting, LLC, focused on helping other members of law enforcement prepare for promotional exams. Take a look at his website -- he retained fellow Hawk Rachel Hennessey '21 for help with the design. Catch the website at www.lighthouselecs.com.

Have shot, will travel. Will Brown '18 is a professional basketball player who has played as a 6'5" swingman in Uruguay's Larre Borges Montevideo and recently signed/joined Larre Borges' compatriot club L. Borges / Larre Borges in the Uruguayan Liga de Ascenso.
| | |
'Span'ning the Globe. We'll expect periodic reports on Will and Nay from the Morales Sports Bureau, and its chairman, Peter Morales '74 who follows these sorts of things and apparently sets down on occasion at Punte del Este in southeastern Uruguay for some South American sun and fun.

Beast of the East. In the last issue, we chronicled the exploits of the Bayonne Little League capturing the District 7 Hudson County championship, with Ryan Klimkowski '98 as an Assistant Coach, and his son, Chase, a key member of the squad. As is Connor Reed, the grandson of the late Kevin Reed '70. Before we could publish again, the Bayonne Bunch went ahead and steamrolled to the New Jersey State Championship and the Metro Atlantic Championship to become the first Hudson County LL team to reach the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA since the West New York Americans in 1966. That team lost in the World Championship game to Houston. Bayonne won its first two games in the tournament before bowing out to Hamilton, Ohio, just two games short of the U.S. Championship! Now, THAT's a team photo!
Post-mortem: When it comes time, Ryan, please don't forget to send all these kids, the whole team, to Hudson Catholic and Coach Alberto Vasquez '99, who led the Hawks to the State Baseball Championship in 2014!
| | |
CEO has a nice ring to it. Virgil Ferreira '98 is the newest Hawk to lead a corporate executive suite, having been named Chief Executive Officer at Winmore, a freight/logistics company in Ellicott City, MD.
| | |
Baseball in his blood/line. Brian Glasser '95 is the Head Coach of the Hawk Junior Varsity Baseball Team. When he is not coaching baseball, Brian is a Detective with the Jersey City Police Department, having that in common with the Varsity Baseball Head Coach, Alberto Vazquez '99. And we think the guy can coach -- his 14-year old daughter, Olivia, who played Little League baseball in Lyndhurst, this year made history as a member of the first all-female baseball team sponsored by a Major League Baseball organization - the Minnesota Twins Girls Baseball 14U National Team. Congrats to daughter and dad!
| | |
Author Appearance. Joe Pagetta '90 will travel from his residence in Nashville, back to Jersey, on September 23rd, to give a speech at Seton Hall University on his book published on August 15th by Vanderbilt University Press -- The Apostle of Tennessee, about the life and times of Father Aloysius Orengo. (https://events.shu.edu/event/49299-robert-tarte-lecture-series-the-apostle-of-tennessee).
After staying the night in Newark, the next day, he will be hopping the PATH train into his old stomping grounds at Journal Square and a return to the school he loves at McGinley Square, at which he will present a copy of his book to President-Principal Terry Matthews for addition to The Library of Hawks in exchange for a tour around the campus.

'The Bridge Walker'
Interview with Vin Pasculli '87
| | |
On May 22nd, Vin Pasculli '87 retired from his chosen profession at the George Washington Bridge, after 25 years. We haven't run into another one of him among our alumni, so he gets the rare Alumni Interview, which he approached in the same manner as he did his job for all those years -- with enthusiasm and good humor! As he embraces retirement and authorship, his soon-to-be-published book, George, The Art of the Crossing, represents a bridge in his own life, and he's ready to share it with the world!
BTL: The official title of your job?
VP: Bridge Painter. For 25 years.
BTL: What would the job description say?
VP: A tradesperson who is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of bridges and other structures, requiring a combination of technical skills and physical stamina, as the work often involves climbing to great heights and working in a variety of weather conditions. Bridge Painters prepare surfaces, apply paint and other coatings, and perform repairs as needed.
BTL: Why THIS job?
VP: I chose this job when I saw an announcement for it and it contained a height test, to be held at the top of the GW Bridge. I was always curious to see if I could pass the strenuous tasks they put you through. I also wanted to go up there and check out the view!
BTL: A typical day at the GWB?
VP: A Bridge Painter's day starts at 530am, showing up at the shop in Fort Lee to change into work clothes and then be assigned your job for the day and a crew to work with. On varying days, you might sandblast, or paint, or mix paint, or rig equipment. At the end of your shift, you returned to the shop and showered before you went home. There is no way you would get in your car and go home filthy.
BTL: What was it like in winter?
VP: Bridge painting season is typically from April 'til early December. The rule of thumb is that paint will not adhere properly to the steel if the air temp is not above 40 degrees. On days below 40 degrees, we would move equipment around and repair or build sandblasting containment. Occasionally, there was work in the anchorage of the bridge, which is underground and is climate-controlled.
BTL: How did your wife and family feel about you doing this job?
VP: For all the years that I was a Bridge Painter, my mother prayed the rosary daily. And her prayers worked! My wife was always nervous about my occupation, but she always coped well knowing the life insurance policy was up to date!
BTL: Wildest experience you ever had?
VP: Tough question. I'd have to say the scariest part of the job is having a falcon fly at you at 100 mph and swoop down to try and knock you off a beam or scare you away because they were trying to protect their nest. Maybe they knew I was a HAWK and felt threatened!
BTL: A little known fun fact about the Bridge?
VP: At the time it was built, plans included a restaurant at the top of the New York Tower.
BTL: Any advice to a young Hawk who might want to follow in your footsteps?
VP: Take a job for which you will have a passion. Do something you enjoy for a living, and you'll never work a day in your life!
BTL: Thanks, Vin! Welcome to the Library of Hawks!
| | |
Vinny will soon become the newest Hawk Author and will join the Library of Hawks in the fall with the publication of his book, George: The Art of The Crossing, a photography book featuring unique, high-perspective images from the top of the GWB, taken by the author himself. More about the book: https://mailchi.mp/20d2581e098a/theartofcrossingpr
Editor's Note: you can find Vinny on New York Giant Game Days at his famous D2 Tailgate!

Tell Us
Just one of many things that unites us as Hawks is that Hudson Catholic alumni spread around the nation and the world are making incredible contributions to their communities, professions, and to Hudson Catholic.
If you know of an exceptional Hawk deserving recognition, we invite you to share why, by writing to advancement@hudsoncatholic.org with examples of Hawk alumni and alumnae leadership, service, and achievement...........and occasional whimsy.

...... that the long-gone famous Bronx school, Power Memorial, that gave us Lew Alcindor, now known as Kareem Abdul Jabbar, was administered by the Irish Christian Brothers? And that Bergen Catholic is administered by the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers? So, to avoid confusion, always refer to Hudson Catholic's origins, like the Montgomery Street side of our school building still proclaims, as "conducted by the De La Salle Christian Brothers.
.......that Tom Long '70, who received a scholarship to attend Columbia University, also received a James R. Hoffa Award, now the James R. Hoffa Memorial Award. You can find that in print, in the 1970 Hudson Catholic Commencement Program! This award was, and continues to be, a financial support program for high school seniors who are the sons, daughters, or financial dependents of Teamster members in pursuit of academics and vocations.
.....and that this year's 50-Year Reunion Class, the Class of '76 had three Ivy Leaguers? Two Lions and a Tiger. No Bears, oh my! Tom Clark attended Princeton, and Gerard Pendrick and the late Dan Larkin attended Columbia. Pendrick has said: "I went to Columbia and spent 12 years there: BA, MA, M.Phil, Ph.D, and was on Faculty for two years." Pendrick may be our most decorated Ivy Leaguer in Hawk History.

From 1972, this Jersey Journal caracature of Hall of Famer Bill Keegan '73. Bill's leadership qualities became self-evident as he quarterbacked the Hawks through thick and thin, spending as much time horizontal as vertical on the field. But all that served as a prelude for what awaited him in his life -- that which he was called to do, and for which he is known as a Hall of Fame Hawk. Bill led the Rescue and Recovery Operation on the World Trade Center Ground Zero site from Day One until the job was completed the following May -- 12 hours a day on the night shift, 7 days a week.

Korrections Korner
In our last issue, we made Giuseppe Fazari '92 a year younger by claiming him to be a member of the Class of '93. That brought a slew of objections from '93 Hawks, so here we are to correct the record. Apolgies to Giuseppe, and to the entire class of '93.
We also misnamed the first dramatic production ever to grace the stage at Hudson Catholic, that stage now named after the director of the first 11 productions performed on what is now known as The Jack Campion Stage at Hudson Catholic. Stalag 17 was actually the third production of Hudson Catholic Dramatics as it was then known, in 1968. The first was Submerged in 1966. Full list below. Which one would you like to see brought back to The Jack Campion Stage at Hudson Catholic by the Hawk thespians of present day? Send it to advancement@hudsoncatholic.org

"My number one goal in life is to hear Jesus say 'Well done, good and faithful servant."
-- Based on The Bible's Parable of the Talents
in Matthew 25:21-23
"Our systems are broken, but don't give up. Education is about community, not politics, and nobody is coming to fix it nationally. It happens school by school."
-- Jeff Immelt, former CEO of General Electric Corp.
"At the end of our lives, I don't think we'll wish we had impressed more people. I think we'll care about whether we loved well, served faithfully, and lived for something bigger than ourselves. That is the kind of life I want to build. Not perfect. Not easy. But rooted in Christ."
-- Joe Slota '72, Author,
and Principal in the eponymous 'Joe Slota Experience'

We Remember
Nicholas Matulic '04
d. 6/11/06
| | |
Nicholas' young life came to a tragic end in Journal Square on the night of June 11, 2006, just two years following his graduation from Hudson Catholic, killed in a street fight. At the time, like so many Hawks before and after him, he had been attending St. Peter's College. This came as a great shock to the school community, as Nick was a popular classmate and known to be a general good guy. His classmates remember Nick as follows:
Hugo Carvajal ’04: Nick Matulic was a great person, always smiling, always saying hello to everyone in the hallways, and a heck of a football player.
Anthony Romano ’04: Nick was a great guy all around. A spectacular athlete, but still humble and friendly. One of the best guys I knew.
Dan Mahalinec ’04: I remember Nick’s friendly and kind demeanor. Although we were not the closest of pals, he was a fellow Hawk who you knew had a good heart. And a big smile. His camo jacket stands in memory, too! Oddly enough, when I pray daily all these years later, I always name him among those departed in my life. It was a tragedy and clearly stuck with me all this time later.
Joe Salinardi ‘04: I had quite a few great stories about Nick but there was one in particular that not only shaped me as athlete but also as a man. Hudson Catholic football was playing against Emerson and the game went into triple overtime. An Emerson wide receiver made a great catch and took off down the field. As I watched this play happen, in slow motion, I remember taking off my helmet and looking at my twin brother with a look of defeat on my face. I couldn’t believe all of our hard work was for nothing and the second game of the season was going to be a loss. With my back turned as I headed towards the sideline, the Hawk crowd starting roaring and cheering. I turned around and, out of nowhere, Nick was right on that receiver’s heels running as fast as he could and he made the most impressive stoppage of the season on the 1-yard line to save us from the loss. When everyone on the field gave up, Nick never stopped, he never quit, and he gave 100% of himself. I learned a lot from that moment and to this day I still live my life as an adult through the efforts Nick displayed that night. I give 100% to everything I do and no matter how bad things may seem, I’ll never quit. Thanks Nick, love ya, brother!
Darren Salinardi ‘04: Nick Matulic was an amazing young man. One of the standout qualities he showcased while on and off the football field was heart. I remember how proud he was to be a Hawk varsity football player. To Nick, it was like being drafted to the NFL, it really meant the world to him to be a part of the Hawk football family. He was kind, smart, athletic and purposeful. He is my brother forever and I will never forget him. I love you my brother, continue to rest in peace.
