The Lord is the Great God
"For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods."
Psalm 95:3
"In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him."
Psalm 95:4
Verse 3: "For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods."

In verse 3 we now have the reason why we have been invited to: (1)"sing for joy to the Lord"; (2) "[to] shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation"; (3) "come before him with thanksgiving"; and (4) "extol him with music and song."

The reason is 2-fold. "The Lord is": (1) "the great God" and (2) "the great King above all gods."

Allen says: "To praise the name of God is to say with integrity something right about God. When we say that 'God is good,' we a praising His name. Similarly, the following are a few examples of genuine statements of praise about the living Yahweh:
"The Lord is great!
His majesty is resplendent!
He has been so good to me!
God never changes!
Jesus is my Savior!"

David Jeremiah says: "Don't ever forget that the one constant in all of life is God's presence with you, and for that He deserves to be praised." (Sanctuary, 10)

Verse 4: "In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him."

There are 2 things being said here: (1) "In his hand are the depths of the earth" and (2) "the mountain peaks belong to him."

The reason "the depths of the earth" are in his hand and "the mountain peaks belong to him" is understood by the fact He is the one who made them.

Isaiah 40:15: "Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust" (NIV).

Isaiah 40:22: "He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in" (NIV).

Isaiah 40:25 - 26: "'To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?' says the Holy One. Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing" (NIV).

Praises & Prayer Requests

Lord, How I long to serve Thee upon some great mission field.
And have the world see how I love Thee by this my Sacrifice.
"Nay," came His voice so gently yet so firm
Walk within Thy house with a perfect heart
And do not for other things yearn.

Then Lord make within these walls
A perfect sacrifice of Thy grace
A place where all who enter
May see Thy face and rest and be renewed.

May those who dwell here Lord
Find always warm welcome
Peace and happy words
That when they go
Their own hearth to build
They will have a perfect pattern
And Thy perfect will fulfill.
-Pearl Anderson
One of the great hymns of the church is one that is not sung very often but has a powerful message. I think it is appropriate for us to conclude our worship today by singing "Channels Only":

How I praise Thee, precious Savior, That Thy love laid hold of me;
Thou hast saved and cleansed and filled me That I might Thy channel be.

Emptied that Thou shouldest fill me, A clean vessel in Thy hand;
With no pow'r but as Thou givest Graciously with each command.
Channels only, blessed Master, But with all Thy wondrous pow'r
Flowing thro' us, Thou canst use us
Ev'ry day and ev'ry hour.
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
