BUEI's 25th Anniversary
Since the opening of BUEI on July 10th, 1997, our vision, “the ocean around Bermuda is widely understood, appreciated and protected”, has remained as relevant today as it was 25 years ago. We are honoured to continue serving our community and beyond in this capacity by educating all who enjoy our exhibits and take part in our educational programmes.
To mark this milestone, BUEI will be hosting events throughout the year for all to experience! Keep an eye on our updates, you won’t want to miss what’s in store!

Youth Climate Summit (YCS) Update
Strengthening local food production was one of the five categories of change suggested by our youth during the launch of the YCS programme in November 2021. It is this necessity for food security that has driven our Climate Justice team in the direction of a community garden project.
On May 19th, representatives from the Climate Justice team met virtually with NourishBot Founders, Linda Lee and James Brake to identify a solution to this challenge. NourishBot have developed a high yielding hydroponics system, which grows up to 50% faster than regular soil systems, produces five times more food in a given space using less water/nutrients, and is fully self-sufficient. The NourishBot solution is digitalised through a customised solar powered minicomputer that regulates the water input, checks the pH of the soil, and even emails you a record of growth, using a camera attached to the planter box.
YCS students have purchased one complete NourishBot system and a starter kit, which arrived in Bermuda early this July. The Climate Justice team met with local gardening expert, Zayne Sinclair on July 2nd, and together they will set up this system with a goal to sell their organic produce at local farmers markets. In addition, they will replicate the NourishBot system using locally sourced planting medium and seeds to assess its viability for food production in Bermuda.

On Exhibit at BUEI
19th Century Diving Suit
As an island surrounded by extremely clear waters, a wide range of fish and coral, and fascinating shipwrecks, Bermuda is truly a diver’s paradise!
The Bermuda Revealed exhibit is full of pieces of Bermuda’s diving history to peruse. Like our 19th century diving suit, which is not only a part of Bermuda’s diving, but also represents the dawn of modern diving.
For years one of the main problems with diving suits was the fact that there was no easy system for getting new air while diving. The solution for this problem came from disaster. An uncontrollable fire in Whitstable England in 1820 led a local man named John Deane to invent a new way to get air through a helmet. When the water hoses of the firemen had no effect on the raging fire, John burrowed a helmet from a medieval suit of armor, connected it to a hose, and got the firemen to pump air into it instead of water.
It didn’t take John long to realize how this idea could be used for profit, and by 1828 he patented a diving suit with thick fabric, weighted boots, and a helmet with large viewing ports; just like the one we have on display in the Bermuda Revealed Exhibit in BUEI’s Ocean Discovery Centre.

Over the course of our existence, approximately half-a million visitors to BUEI have toured our treasured exhibits. Additionally, multiple generations of locals have come through our doors for educational courses, school camps, informative talks and engaging activities. Many have visited as students and are now registering their own children. Membership provides the foundational support that makes it all possible.

What is Tectonic Shift?
The Earth is in a constant state of change. Earth’s crust, called the lithosphere, consists of 15 to 20 moving tectonic plates. The plates can be thought of like pieces of a cracked shell that rest on the hot, molten rock of Earth’s mantle and fit snugly against one another. The heat from radioactive processes within the planet’s interior causes the plates to move, sometimes toward and sometimes away from each other. This movement is called plate motion, or tectonic shift.
Our planet looks very different from the way it did 250 million years ago, when there was only one continent, called Pangaea, and one ocean, called Panthalassa. As Earth’s mantle heated and cooled over many millennia, the outer crust broke up and commenced the plate motion that continues today.
