Why is it so difficult to build naturally-affordable units in our region that are attainable for the middle class? Several experts, including BIA-LAV Executive Committee Member Ken Kahan, President of
California Landmark Group
, opined on the topic. The Urban Land Institute hosted a breakfast discussion called “The “Missing Middle – Challenges and Opportunities for Middle-Income Housing Development”. Ken encouraged jurisdictions to create an environment conducive for the natural production of affordable housing, such as allowing higher wood structures, lower costs, and more incentives like SB 1818.

“KB Homes was experiencing extremely problematic delays on a project with a utility, to the point that it had potential to delay homeowner move-ins.
BIA was able to get our project moving expeditiously so that our homeowners moved in on time. In this way, BIA has provided tremendous benefit to our company. I highly recommend any builder or developer to be a member of BIA in order to realize the same benefits, and more."
