Worship Preview

Every All Saints' Day, we trot out Hebrews 12 and talk about the cloud of witnesses, but is our perception of those who have passed into eternal life relevant any other day of the year? Other branches of Christianity clearly have a vivid vision of the saints that went before them built into their practices of piety (Catholic and Eastern Orthodox especially), but Protestantism seems divided on the matter. Is our awareness of the cloud of witnesses really important at all? Yes! We'll talk about it this Sunday. |

Nov. 11th: A Conversation about Aging, Dementia & Alzheimer’s with Elizabeth, Ph.D., CDS. Have you forgotten someone’s name or where you placed your keys and wondered is this normal? Have you been worried or scared about cognitive changes?
One out of 3 of us will have some type of dementia. But it’s a difficult subject. Join Elizabeth, who recently earned Dementia Specialist certification, for an informal and open discussion about aging, cognitive changes, dementia, and Alzheimer’s.

Dec. 16th: The Spirituality of Vincent Van Gogh. The new Vincent Van Gogh exhibit is a must-see at the Columbus Museum of Art. The exhibition Through Vincent's Eyes: Van Gogh and His Sources presents paintings, drawings, and prints by the artists most beloved by Vincent Van Gogh, firmly connecting his art to its late 19th-century context.
Details: We will meet at 10:30 on Dec. 16th for a docent lead tour of the Van Gogh exhibit. Pastor Colleen will be joining us and giving us some insight into the spirituality of Vincent Van Gogh. The cost for the museum is $13. Plan to stay for lunch in the cafe on your own to continue the discussion and pop in the gift shop for a unique Christmas present!
Elizabeth will be taking RSVPs for this special outing capped at 20 participants. If we have more than 20, we will plan another event.

Afghans
Settling in Ohio
Thanks to the initiative of Barbara Chuko, a small group of persons at Bexley UMC are exploring forming a team to host the resettlement of an Afghan family here in central Ohio. This work would be done under the guidance of the non-profit organization CRIS (Community Refugee & Immigration Services). The Executive Director of CRIS, Angela K. Plummer, and several other experts on refugee resettlement along with Yilun Cheng, the Immigration Reporter for The Columbus Dispatch will be speaking to the Columbus Metropolitan Club next Wednesday, November 10 from noon-1 pm on the topic, “Afghans Settling in Ohio”. This event will be held in-person at the Boat House, but Colleen Ogle will be showing the live-stream of the panel discussion at the church in the Palmer Lounge. If you are interested in viewing this talk and panel discussion, you are invited to come to the church to watch it with Rev. Ogle and others. Please arrive by 11:45 am.

2021 Angel Tree
It’s hard to believe, but we’re already in the planning stages for this year's “Angel Tree.”
We’ll again be partnering with the City of Whitehall and their “Community Kids Holiday Program”. We’ve been given the gift requests of 55 needy children. Beginning this Sunday, November 7th, you’ll be able to select a child from our Angel Tree at church or make a selection online. All gifts must be returned (unwrapped) by Tuesday, November 30th so that the Whitehall elves have time to organize and distribute the gifts before Christmas.
If you don't have time to go shopping this year, Target and Walmart gift cards are welcome, and checks can also be made out to the Bexley United Methodist Church with "Angel Tree" written on the memo line.

Fall Festival Fun and Fellowship |

BUMC's Fall Festival was a hit! Thank you to Tiffany Duncan for organizing it and to all the individuals and groups who brought goodies, set up games and crafts, and joined in the fun. |

The next safety-conscious, family-friendly event coming up will be the annual Hanging of the Greens, Sunday, November 28 at 5 pm. We will meet in the church courtyard for a cook-out featuring items like hot dogs on the grill and roast marshmallows for S'mores. Then adults and youth will decorate the church for Advent/Christmas while the young ones work on Christmas crafts and games.
If you have a portable fire pit and/or firewood that you would be willing to bring to the church for use at the Hanging of the Greens, please contact the church office at 614.231.2781 or churchoffice@bexleyumc.org as soon as possible.

GriefShare Surviving the Holidays lunch, video, and discussion
November 7th at 12:15 pm
When you are grieving a loved one’s death, the holiday season can be especially painful. Join Barb Shappell and Elizabeth Murphy on November 7th at 12:15 pm for a light lunch and video based discussion on how to live the holiday season in a new way with encouragement and practical tips. We will discuss:
• Being prepared for surprising emotions that may hit over the holidays
• What to do about traditions and other coming changes
• How to handle holiday parties and invitations
• How to survive potentially awkward moments with other people
• Where to find comfort, strength, and hope in a seemingly hopeless time
Those who attend will receive a Survival Guide which includes journaling ideas, and exercises for daily help through the holiday season. There is a $5 fee which can be paid on Nov. 7th. Please RSVP to Elizabeth at murphy@bexleyumc.org.

Equipping Congregations for Theological Conversations

Would you trust a psychologist who had never heard of Sigmund Freud? What about a literature professor who hadn’t read the works of William Shakespeare, or a philosopher who wasn’t familiar with Aristotle? Each one might claim to be an authority, but without taking time to learn about the authorities that came before them, they can’t possibly know where their ideas came from and why they’re true.
People prefer to learn things from diligent students of the discipline they’re talking about. Our psychologists should know Freud, our literature professors should know Shakespeare, and our philosophers should know Aristotle. But what about our Christian leaders? When they talk to others about their faith, they present with authoritative knowledge about the most important aspects of existence. They claim to know about God, creation, and the nature of human existence itself! The Christian tradition has a long line of spiritual and intellectual geniuses who helped establish and refine the core of what we believe. Are Christians sincere students in the knowledge they claim to profess? Are they ready to speak with authority about the faith they love so much?

Maloney Center Improvement
The Maloney Center now has carpeting. Many persons noticed an improvement in the acoustics of the room. Come and check it out. We have more improvements in store, but we need people to give their feedback from different spots in the room. We won't stop working on the acoustics in that beautiful space until it is pleasant to hear, converse, and sing with the Sunburst band there. Thanks to the Trustees for their leadership and for funding this project, which came from the Trustees' Building Fund!

Church Gardens
Have you ever stopped to appreciate the beauty of the church grounds? If you have not walked around the property recently, please take time to do so. Much of the work of planting, maintaining, and weeding the planting beds has been done for almost thirty years by the quiet dedication and loving service of BUMC members Bill and Phyllis Coleman. Even as the Colemans plan to continue their service, more hands are needed, especially from persons who are willing to help with weeding and seasonal cleanup of flowerbeds. In the spring, we will be calling for persons or families to volunteer as weekly weeders. For now, please take the opportunity to notice and be thankful for the beautiful and welcoming appearance that the Colemans have given the church.

Have you ever wanted to be a camera operator? Now that we have some new streaming equipment, we’re looking for people that can help record! Are you going to be in worship? Do you mind pointing a camera while you worship? Could you do it once a month? Then you’re the perfect candidate. WOCS invite women to join them from 1:30 to 3:00 pm on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month for conversation, a prayer time and Bible study. WOCS meets at the church in the Palmer Study.

We are now focusing efforts on collecting children's shoes. Please bring pairs of gently worn shoes your kids may have outgrown with you on Sunday morning (or stop by during the week) and place them in the basket in the hallway outside of the Palmer Study on the main floor.

The Holy Spirit Book Study

Join Dale James and Barb Shappell as they lead a book study on The Holy Spirit by Billy Graham (book included free with the study). Class will meet in the Palmer Study every Sunday morning in between services and continue for several weeks.
