2014 DOMAINE JEAN-MICHEL GUILLON
"
Jean Michel Guillon is indisputably a man on a mission to make
world class wine" Allen Meadows
|
 |
We are delighted to offer the newly released 2014s from
Jean-Michel Guillon.
These are fleshy, supple, robust wines that offer serious value for money and will provide much drinking pleasure - great value Burgundies, which are nigh on impossible to find with any age.
We had the immense pleasure of tasting the 2013s in the office and and immediately bought the Domaine's remaining stock (which is now almost all gone!). Understandably we jumped at the chance to secure a great parcel of the newly released 2014s which we will be importing directly from the Domaine later this month.
"
they're generous and fleshy and easy-to-like though with good freshness and transparency. They're the kind of burgundies that almost everyone likes because there's really nothing not to like."
Jean-Michel Guillon on the 2014s, Burghound
"This is not a grower that I know well, but this excellent wine suggests I should investigate further." Neal Martin on the Guillon, Clos de Vougeot 2013
Attention to detail in the vineyard and vinification is scrupulous with yields kept low to produce the best fruit, and 100% of the finest new oak (notably this approach is carried across the range starting even with the Marsannay). Jean-Michel has also introduced meticulous practices such as whole cluster fermentation to emphasise the purity of the fruit.
Guillon is a passionate winemaker who takes Rousseau, Dugat-Py and Denis Bachelet as his inspiration to make rich, impressive Burgundies; these are highly accomplished, succulent Burgundies which, to quote Allen Meadows "retain a clear sense of style and grace and remain identifiably pinot noir".

2014 MARSANNAY CLOS DES PORTES MONOPOLE £170
per case 12 IB
Old vine Pinot Noir with more in common with 1er Cru Gevrey Chambertin than nearby Marsannay.
"Mild reduction pushes what appears to be ripe fruit to the background. Otherwise there is good verve to the racy, intense and well-delineated flavors that don't possess the same mid-palate concentration but are persistent and well-balanced. This could also be approached young if desired. Drink 2019+"
87-89pts Allen Meadows, Burghound

2014 GEVREY CHAMBERTIN CUVEE PERE GALLAND £275
per case 12 IB
Excellent quality for a village Gevrey, it is named after the man who helped Jean-Michel learn his trade.
"A much more subtle if not invisible application of oak easily allows the bright nose of red and dark currant, earth and humus to be appreciated. There is both lovely energy and detail to the rich and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a dry, clean and balanced finale. This should drink reasonably well early if desired. Drink 2019+"

2014 GEVREY CHAMBERTIN VIEILLES VIGNES £300
per case 12 IB
"I would describe this as moderately wooded as well with its notes of menthol and dense fruited nose of plum, dark berries, spice and abundant earth scents. There is outstanding richness and concentration to the notably powerful and serious middle weight plus flavors that deliver excellent persistence on the rustic finale. This old school effort won't win any awards for refinement but it is a first-rate Gevrey villages that really saturates the palate with dry extract. Highly recommended provided that you have the patience to give it at least 6 to 8 years of cellaring. Top value. Drink 2024+"

2014 GEVREY LES CHAMPEAUX 1er Cru £380
per case 12 IB
"A cool, pure and restrained nose speaks of red currant, plum, earth and a hint of the sauvage. There is lovely detail to the sleek and beautifully refined middle weight flavors that retain a fine sense of delineation before terminating in a balanced, classy and mineral-inflected finish. Textbook Champeaux. Drink 2026+"

|
2014 GEVREY LES CHAMPONNETS 1er Cru £380
per case 12 IB
"Moderate amounts of wood and menthol characters frame the spicy and earthy dark berry fruit aromas. There is excellent mid-palate concentration to the velvety and exceptionally rich medium-bodied flavors that coat the mouth on the powerful, stony and impressively persistent finale. This too is textbook though note that it's going to require at least a decade of bottle edge to shed the very firm tannins. Sweet Spot. Drink 2029+"
91-94pts Allen Meadows, Burghound
|
2014 GEVREY PETITE CHAPELLE 1er Cru £440
per case 12 IB
"Here too there is moderate but not dominant wood setting off the more elegant and airy red and dark pinot aromas that exhibit background nuances of earth, floral and spice. There is a notably finer mouth feel to the even more mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that retain a lovely sense of delineation on the punchy, focused and well-balanced finale. Drink 2026+"

2014 CLOS DE VOUGEOT Grand Cru £780
per case 12 IB
From a very small (0.17 hectare) parcel of 40+ year old vines.
"A brooding and inexpressive nose only grudgingly gives up notes of red currant, dark pinot and ample warm earth nuances, all of which is trimmed in moderate wood toast. The sleekly muscular big-bodied flavors possess very fine mid-palate concentration while delivering outstanding power and punch on the youthfully austere finale. This highly persistent effort will also need plenty of time in a cool cellar. Drink 2029+"

2014 MAZIS CHAMBERTIN Grand Cru £780
per case 12 IB
From a small parcel of 20+ year old vines, and often considered the best Grand Cru
.
"A potent nose reflects notes of reduction, wood toast and menthol. There is seriously impressive size, weight and power to the full-bodied and muscular flavors that display notably more minerality on the hugely long and serious but impeccably well-balanced finale. This is structured and indisputably built-to-age but it's not especially austere or rustic. Drink 2029+"
