| | Message from the Superintendent | | |
Hello Berryessa Community,
As we approach the end of the school year, we’re excited to celebrate the incredible achievements of our students. From successful English Learner reclassifications to inspiring Career Day events, these milestones highlight the progress our students are making—and remind us of the limitless potential they hold. Together, these experiences encourage our students to work hard and dream big.
A big thank you to everyone who helped make our Career Days such a success last month! Your support has opened up new possibilities for our students, and we’re excited to see them continue their journey toward success.
With state testing ahead, we’re confident that our students are ready. They’ve worked hard all year, and we know they’ll rise to the challenge!
Thank you to our teachers, support staff, administrators, and parents for all your efforts supporting our students. Let’s finish the year strong and keep looking ahead to the bright futures our students are building!
With BUSD pride,
Dr. Roxane Fuentes
Superintendent

Celebrating our English-Language Learners:
Reclassification Celebration
| | |
On April 1, we had the honor of celebrating the remarkable achievement of 170 students who fulfilled the requirements to be reclassified as English Proficient. Each student met or exceeded standards on the rigorous state assessments which include the English Language Proficiency Assessment for California Test and the state Smarter Balance Assessment in English and Math. We are incredibly proud of these students for reaching this significant milestone and look forward to all they will continue to accomplish in their educational journeys.
Being multilingual opens doors to greater cultural understanding and enhances learning opportunities. This achievement is a powerful reminder of the strength of our community’s diversity. Congratulations!
| | Imagining the Future: BUSD Career Days | | Congratulations and thanks to all those who were involved in our Laneview, Morrill, Piedmont, and Sierramont Career Days! At BUSD, our community is dedicated to empowering our students and helping them explore their interests and future careers opportunities. Our annual Career Days offer middle school students a unique chance to hear directly from local professionals and explore a wide range of career opportunities. We are incredibly grateful to our teachers, staff, community partners, guests, and students for making this day both enjoyable and enriching! Thank you to Laneview for branching out and providing this experience to their elementary students as well! | | |
Facilities Management Update:
The Work of our 7-11 Committee

- Sell or lease to non-profit organizations (e.g., preschool, child care facilities, YMCA)
- Sell or lease to non-public school (e.g., SPED programs)
- Lease to churches
- Short term lease to VCs/startups
- Lease to senior care services
- Lease to community college
- Lease to vocational schools
- Sale for residential development with community space
- Lease for community center for dance, art, sports, and other activities

Our Local Branch Librarian Named
Berryessa Citizen of the Year
| | |
The Berryessa Citizens Advisory Council (BCAC) Citizen of the Year award, established in 1991, honors individuals who make outstanding contributions to the community. We are pleased to announce that the 2024 honoree is our local Berryessa Library Branch Manager, Candice Tran!
Ms. Tran has long been a valued member of the Berryessa community, known for her leadership and energy. Born in Vietnam, she moved to California with her family, later graduating from UC Berkeley and earning a Master’s in Library Science.
She began her career with the San José Public Library in 2001, quickly building strong community relationships and launching inclusive programs across various branches. In 2011, she became Branch Manager of the Berryessa Branch, where she continues to make a lasting impact. Ms. Tran and her husband raised two daughters in Berryessa, both of whom attended local schools.
A dedicated advocate for her team and community, she has transformed the library into a vibrant hub offering hundreds of free programs annually. She fosters partnerships with schools and organizations, ensuring the library remains an open, welcoming space. She has especially worked to ensure our students have a fun and safe space to be after school.
Ms. Tran’s passion for public service, commitment to equity, and focus on empowering others make her a truly deserving recipient of this year’s award. Congratulations, Ms. Candice Tran, and thank you for all you do for Berryessa families!
| | Volunteers Needed for Berryessa Art & Wine Festival | | |
The Berryessa Art & Wine Festival is back and we need your help! Mark your calendars! The beloved Berryessa Art & Wine Festival returns on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Penitencia Creek Park.
As many of you know, this free, family-friendly event supports the Berryessa Union School District Teacher Grant Program, with proceeds going directly toward enriching classroom experiences for our students.
To make this year’s festival a success, we’re asking for your support! The Berryessa Art Festival Foundation is currently recruiting volunteers to lend a hand with setup on Friday afternoon, as well as throughout the day on Saturday for event operations and cleanup. Whether you can give an hour or more, your time and energy will make a meaningful difference. Additionally, we are seeking two qualified individuals to serve as first aid support during the event.
Let’s come together as a community to support our schools and celebrate what makes Berryessa special. Thank you in advance for your time and generosity! To sign up or learn more, please contact Michael Kraus, Berryessa Art Festival Foundation Secretary, at (408) 242-0823 or mkraus94@gmail.com.
