Message from the Superintendent

Dear BUSD Community,

As we celebrate National Nutrition Month, we recognize the vital role that healthy food choices play in building both strong bodies and focused minds. When students eat balanced meals that include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, they receive essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates.

Our dedicated nutrition services team is continuously working to provide the best meals for our students. We are pleased to introduce an expanded selection of wholesome, plant-based options. Looking ahead to spring and summer, we’ll be featuring specialty salads, with fresh, flavorful choices perfect for the season.

The connection between nutrition and learning becomes even more powerful when combined with outdoor experiences. Time spent in outdoor classrooms or physical activities encourages movement, reduces stress and strengthens overall well-being.

Healthy minds and healthy bodies grow together when students are physically active and nourished with wholesome foods. Outdoor learning environments stimulate curiosity and creativity, while proper nutrition ensures the brain has the fuel it needs to absorb more information.

Together, these efforts reflect our commitment to supporting the whole child: academically, physically, and emotionally. By nourishing our students with wholesome meals and encouraging active, outdoor learning experiences, we are laying the foundation for lifelong healthy habits. Thank you for partnering with us in promoting balanced nutrition and active lifestyles that help every student thrive, both inside and outside the classroom.

With BUSD Pride,

Dr. Roxane Fuentes

Superintendent

See what our students are saying about our meals!

National Nutrition Month is Here!

March is a great time to celebrate healthy eating, and the role nutritious meals play in helping students learn and thrive. Every meal in our kitchen is planned to meet strict federal nutrition standards and includes whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and key nutrients that support energy and focus.

Studies have shown that students who eat school meals are more likely to make healthy choices. A balanced diet supports concentration, academic success, and long-term wellness. For more information on school meals, click here.

We’re also expanding our healthy, plant-based options, including tofu lo mein, veggie spaghetti, orange tofu, veggie alfredo pasta, tofu teriyaki, paneer tikka masala, and veggie chili. Specialty salads like Asian chicken salad and Caesar salad will be features this spring and summer.

Why choose schools meals?

  • FREE breakfast and lunch for all students
  • No need to pack daily lunches!
  • Opportunities to try new foods
  • Safe, high-quality meals
  • Consuming school lunch promotes less food waste
  • Increased funding for our district through participation

Walden West Science Camp for 5th Graders

Learning in the outdoors, BUSD 5th graders have attended Walden West Outdoor Science School, a hands-on environmental education camp in the hills of Saratoga. There, students explore science through real-world experiences in forests, meadows, and creeks. This valuable experience is made possible in large part thanks to parents, who play a fundamental role in raising funds to support student participation and activities.

Children learn about ecology, watershed and water science, and earth science, investigating topics like ecosystems, water quality, soil, weather, and local geology. Using tools such as thermometers, magnifiers, nets, and field guides, students collect data and make observations in nature.

Students stay in cabins with classmates under the guidance of trained naturalists and teachers. Camp life builds independence, responsibility, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, while fostering confidence and a deeper appreciation of science and the environment.

We are grateful to the BUSD parents for their support in making these experiences possible!

Read Across America

We celebrated the joy of reading during Read Across America events! Thank you to all those who organized events and helped make them a success!

Every day is a good day to inspire a child to take a book and read.
