December 2022

THIS MONTH'S HIGHLIGHTS

Finding Order Amid the Chaos of Codes

During a short break between intern and junior year of residency, Dr. Senter-Zapata built a rudimentary app designed for trainees that could decrease code-related anxiety, decision fatigue, and cognitive load while increasing adherence to AHA guidelines and improving outcomes. After being introduced to the Brigham Digital Innovation Hub (iHub), Dr. Senter-Zapata pitched his project idea at the iHub's open innovation studio and received wonderful support, which included a suggestion to collaborate with colleagues at the Healthcare Transformation Lab (HTL) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). After several months of working with the HTL, his project was accepted to HTL's 2022-2023 Healthcare Innovation Fellowship program. Dr. Senter-Zapata aims to publish his trial results in the spring of 2023 and later widely disseminate the app.

Guidance for Sharing Model Code and Data as a Requirement for Publication

As AI/ML research continues to expand, there are increasing privacy concerns stemming from the publication or dissemination of model code, hyperparameters, weights, and training datasets. At the same time, in an effort to advance the field, ensure scientific reproducibility, and embrace open science, many journals and granting agencies are requiring machine learning model code with or without associated data to be shared as a requirement for publication. This document provides guidance for researchers as they consider when to publish and what elements to share as part of a discrete individual research project (i.e. not part of an on-going open source activity).
