BYDE's Spring Concert

The Barrington Youth Dance Ensemble presented their 2016 Spring Concert on June 17th and 18th at Barrington High School's Richard C. Johnson Auditorium. Over 500 attendees enjoyed the Concert which featured BYDE audience favorites including the comedic Graduation Ball, the imaginative children's ballet Scenes from Childhood, Fosse-inspired Razzle Dazzle, along with BYDE's premiere of guest choreographer Eddy Ocampo's stunning contemporary work MOZheart.

BYDE Full Company members Kate Buckingham, Alexandra Ebert, Stephanie Eggers, Caleigh Meehan, Juliana Nikolich, Abigail Roberts, Eliza Seagrist, Alexandra Skopek, Sailor Streeter, and Victoria Van Hollen performed featured roles in the comedic one-act ballet Graduation Ball, staged by BYDE resident choreographer Gregory Merriman. The ballet followed the hilarious happenings of a Graduation Ball for young women in a boarding school, to which cadets from a neighboring military academy were invited. BYDE dancers were joined by dazzling professional guest artists Devin Buchanan and Adam Houston, of Giordano Dance Chicago, and Malachi Squires, Chicago free lance artist. BYDE company member John Kolasinski and ISU dance major Matthew Echevarria also joined the cast of cadets. Stealing the show with their over-the-top performance were Wade Schaaf, former BYDE member and current artistic director of Chicago Repertory Ballet, and Buddy King, Chicago based actor and performer, who reprised their roles of the Headmistress and the General, respectively.

Other highlights included Eddy Ocampo's MOZheart, a georgeous contemporary ballet set to a rich Mozart score. First presented by Salt Creek Ballet in 2014, the dancers, dressed in white, depicted the energy of young and blossoming love, and transformed that energy into a contemporary ballet full of abstraction and gesture.

Young Barrington Dance Academy students took the stage alongside BYDE company members in the charming Scenes from Childhood, which showcased the magic and excitement of everyday life seen through the eyes of a child, in exciting pieces such as "Fireworks at Dusk", "Birdcage Polka", and other quaint scenes.

"What a marvelous time we all had preparing for this production," says Mary Brennan, Founder and Artistic Director of BYDE. "My artistic staff and dancers, both professional and student, have spent the last several months in rehearsals which were a combination of high intensity focus and just plain fun. The dancers were working with three guest choreographers and performed ballet, contemporary dance and musical theatre, so our time preparing was varied and exciting. We also had a great time working with the dancers developing their acting ability for Graduation Ball. Our guest dancers were not only brilliant on stage but wonderful mentors for the BYDE dancers. In turn, they strive to set a good example to the younger Barrington Dance Academy children who performed in Scenes from Childhood. This blending of performers, choreographers and coaches is inspiring."

Summer BDA News

This summer, our little dancers had a great time in BDA's first ever "Bibbity Bobbity Boutique"! Dancers enjoyed a different princess themed class each week, and two special weeks of dress up and princess makeovers.

Our Pre Pointe dancers capped off their hard work this summer with a fitting for their pre pointe shoes. Congratulations dancers!

Be sure to visit our "Changement Sale" in the BDA lobby for great deals on dancewear for the upcoming season. All proceeds benefit BYDE! We are also accepting donations of gently used dancewear.

4th of July

The BYDE Company members and BDA students had a great time walking in Barrington's 4th of July Parade this year. Our Nutcracker themed entry was a highlight of the parade!
Greg Etter: In Loving Memory

We are all so very saddened by the recent passing BYDE's Lighting Designer Gregory Etter.  For the last several years, Greg's serious health challenges were of deep concern for all of us, but in typical form he soldiered on.  He was a creative spirit on the deepest level and such a blessing to us for being part of the foundation that gave birth to our first Nutcracker.  He donated hundreds of hours of his time and talent to help the company flourish.

Greg possessed intelligence and integrity but above all was a sensitive and loving friend.  He was a class act.  We will miss you, Greg.
