Roundabout Landmarks Completion Schedule

Babcock Ranch’s series of eight planned roundabout landmarks are simultaneously wayfinders and storytellers, bringing the past to the present to serve as a reminder of the land’s rich history and future invested in nature, sustainability, education, and innovation. Located at the town’s major intersections, these iconic landmarks help explorers along the town’s trails find their way home and symbolize a time when the world moved a little slower and celebrate the pioneering spirit of farmers and ranchers who harnessed wind for water, monitored environment-enhancing controlled burns atop fire towers and marked time by the friendly toll of the school bell.

  • The Windmill (Completed) – Located at Cypress Parkway and Curry Preserve Drive. Working ranchers drew up well water from deep in the earth for their families and animals to drink, bathe in and help them grow. Windmills dotted the landscape, pumping water and creaking gently in the breeze.
  • The Bell Tower (Completed) – Located near Babcock Schools at Lake Babcock Drive and Cypress Parkway. Education has always been a part of life on the Ranch since the 1830s when the schoolhouse constructed its bell tower to mark time throughout the day. The bell from our tower can still be heard throughout the neighborhoods.
  • The Water Tower (Mid-April 2024 projected completion) – Located at Cypress Parkway and Muhly Grass Road. Built to provide running water, these towers were a marvel of innovation, using gravity to send it to homes and farms. Our Water Tower is a testament to the sustainable innovation that still makes our community strong.
  • The Farmstead (April 2024 projected completion) – Located at Muhly Grass Road and Saw Palmetto Parkway. For generations, Babcock was a working ranch with herds of horses roaming the fields. We honor this heritage with a beautiful sculpture of a mare and foal grazing freely under the sun and moon.
  • The Barn (May 2024 projected completion) – Located at Saw Palmetto Parkway and Curry Preserve Drive. Our Barn pays homage to the agricultural history of the land, with its timber frame and a dry-laid stone wall constructed using old-world methods.
  • The Oak (May 2024 projected completion) – Located at Babcock Trail and Bluebird Trail, the Oak is a community treasure. More than 50 years old, its grand stature and winding branches make it one of the most beautiful trees on the property. Having survived numerous storms, it is a symbol of the resilience of the land and its residents.
  • The Flag (May 2024 projected completion) – Located at Babcock Trail and Cypress Parkway. The centerpiece of the busiest roundabout in our community, The Flag honors the veterans who live in our community as a constant reminder of their service and the freedom we all enjoy. Forever in peace, may it wave.
  • The Fire Lookout Tower (July 2024 projected completion) – Located at Babcock Trail and Saw Palmetto Parkway, this replica of the fire lookout tower on the working ranch represents an important part of land conservation. Only around 100 lookout towers exist in Florida today, used for fire spotting and environmental education.
Progress Update on William and
Mary Ann Smith Sports Complex

Construction is steadily progressing on the eagerly anticipated 23-acre William and Mary Ann Smith Sports Complex, located behind the Babcock Schools campus, and is expected to open this year.

The sections of the sports complex are in the following various stages of completion:

  • Softball Field – Synthetic turf has been installed, and secondary structures are ongoing
  • Baseball Field - Synthetic turf has been installed, and secondary structures are ongoing
  • Natural Turf Soccer/Multipurpose Field – Sand and soil-based mixture is ongoing. Sod will be laid in March and requires a 60-day grow-in period before use.
  • Stadium Field – Synthetic turf will be installed in March. The synthetic track surface will be applied over an asphalt base in April and requires a 28-day cure time before use. Installation of the bleachers and press box is ongoing.
  • Gateway Building – Located near the baseball and softball fields. Construction has started and is anticipated to be completed in May.
  • Skate Park – The concrete structure is completed. Sidewalks, landscaping, and lights are anticipated to be completed in April.

For your safety, please remember that residents are strictly PROHIBITED from currently accessing the sports complex, as it is an active construction site. No exceptions will be permitted under any circumstances. Please be aware that active construction sites within Babcock Ranch, including the sports complex, are extremely dangerous, and a lot of heavy machinery is operated.

As always, your safety is our top priority. We would like to thank you in advance for your kind cooperation while we continue the construction of the sports complex. We will continue to update you on the sports complex’s progress and grand opening day.
Letter from Nashville:

It's not hard to understand how Nashville could be a competitive place, with driven people from all over the world competing for the coveted spotlight. But there's another, deeply collaborative side of the Nashville music world, in which songwriters and musicians work together behind the scenes to shape the songs the stars sing.

Our next Babcock Jams workshop will give you a taste of that Nashville and a shot of inspiration - whether you are an aspiring picker or writer. On Saturday, April 6, members of the band Nashville Gone South will be featured guests at our Babcock Jams Workshop for an intimate conversation about collaboration, jamming, and learning to work together as a band. As always, bring instruments; you'll have your place to join in! That's Saturday, April 6th, from 5-7 p.m. at Lake Timber Lodge; space is limited so please register.

Sunday, April 7th, Nashville Gone South will perform a special Midday Concert at the Founder's Square bandshell at 11 a.m.!

Singer-songwriters Beverly Jane, Eddie Paul, Jeff Randall, and Darren Bates met in Nashville. Together as Nashville Gone South, these four seasoned performing artists have been entertaining packed crowds across South Florida with their energetic and heartfelt songs and stories. Don't miss this special performance!

More announcements to come regarding additional Babcock Jams events in April, watch this space. For general information about Babcock Jams, email [email protected], and if you're on Facebook, please join the Babcock Jams group.

See you in April!

Wildlife Photo of the Week: Killdeer
Species: Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus)

Location: Lake Babcock

Christina's Take: Insights from Babcock Ranch Environmental Mitigation Manager Christina Kontos:

  • The Killdeer is a native medium-sized plover that has two bold black breast bands across a white chest, a white belly, brown back and wings, a tawny orange rump, and a bright orange-red ring around their eyes.
  • The killdeer received their name due to their distinctive voice as they wail a call that sounds like "kill-deer."
  • Due to their very vocal nature, killdeer was once known as the “chattering plover” or “noisy plover.”
  • Their diet consists of a variety of invertebrates, including crayfish, grasshoppers, beetles, earthworms, and snails.
  • When a male and female mate, they pick out a nesting site and begin a ritual known as a scrape ceremony. During this ceremony, the male and female take turns scraping the shallow depression on the open habitat before mating ensues.
  • They lay a clutch of 4-6 camouflaged eggs that hatch after three to four weeks of incubation.
  • Protective parents will often distract predators from their nest and young by drawing attention to themselves through behaviors such as loud calls, head bobs, running away, and their famous distraction mechanism known as the “broken wing act!"

Important Notice: Safe Use of Endurant Turf Colorant
Residents have expressed concerns about a turf colorant being applied to the grass. We want to assure you that the product, Endurant Turf Colorant, is completely safe. It is an agricultural colorant made of organic pigments selected to provide effective colorant value while offering more environmentally friendly alternatives to typical grass management practices. Endurant Turf Colorant helps conserve water resources, reduces the need for overseeding, and minimizes the use of fertilizers, fungicides, pesticides, and other harmful chemicals.

For best results and ecological benefits, Endurant Turf Colorant should be applied at the recommended rates and allowed to dry sufficiently before exposure to foot traffic or pets to prevent staining.
HOW TO ADDRESS LANDSCAPING ISSUES AT YOUR HOME

Approaching landscaping ground personnel directly will NOT resolve outstanding issues, as they follow directions from project managers. For prompt resolution, please use the following methods:
  • Reach out to your Management team for your particular community
  1. Those of you in a service area run by the Master Association, please feel free to email [email protected] or call the office directly at 941-676-7191.
  2. For sub-associations (Babcock National, Crescent Grove, The Preserves, Edgewater Shores, Northridge, etc.): Contact the respective entities as they have their own landscaping contracts for those areas.

  1. Use the ORANGE "work order" button on the website.
  2. Submissions are reviewed daily by the Master Association Landscape Manager.
  3. Urgent issues are prioritized, and the Landscape Manager forwards them to the respective teams for sub-associations.
  4. Keep in mind that a sub-association may ALSO have its own work order system that you could use.
Benefits of Aeration and Top Dressing Your Turf
Aeration
  • Improves root growth: Aeration reduces compaction, which helps roots grow deeper and thicker.
  • Increases health: Aeration allows water, oxygen, and nutrients to move easily down to the root zone
  • Reduces thatch: Aeration removes plugs of roots and thatch from the soil
  • Makes lawns more efficient: Aeration makes lawns more efficient at absorbing water and nutrients.

Top Dressing with Organic Soil
  • In our Florida sandy soils that may contain clay and rocks, compost top dressing would increase water and nutrient retention, make nutrients available, increase microbial activity, improve aeration, improve soil quality, level lawn, and break down thatch.
How to Resolve Landscape Issues Quickly

Submitting a work order is the fastest way to address landscaping concerns. Our Landscape Manager, James Carey, reviews tickets daily to ensure they are completed. If there is an emergency, he will reach out to you.

It also helps them gauge interest in events so they can plan accordingly. While it's not mandatory for free events or events with plenty of space, it's still a good idea to register if you plan on attending. However, for paid events and events with limited space, registration is required. So, make sure to register in advance to secure your spot and ensure a seamless event experience!
