Wildlife Photo of the Week: Cuban Tree Frog
MORNING VISITOR: A Cuban tree frog clings to a bedroom window at the home of resident Richard Jennings. This invasive species expanded its range to include Florida in the 1920s.
Non-Native Arrived with Ornamental Plants
This week’s Wildlife Photo of the Week, submitted by resident Richard Jennings, shows a Cuban tree frog clinging to his bedroom window. As usual, we turned to Babcock Ranch Environmental Mitigation Manager Christina Kontos for her observations:
This is a Cuban tree frog (Osteopilus septentrionalis), which was introduced to Florida during the 1920s by hitchhiking on ornamental plants on ships from Cuba. Their body color is variable ranging from gray, green, or brown, and may be marked with irregular dark stripes or blotches.
This tree frog is a non-native and invasive species due to its negative impact on Florida's native biodiversity by preying upon smaller native tree frogs, which include the squirrel tree frog (Hyla squirella), and green tree frog (Hyla cinerea), as well as native toads and lizards. Their tadpoles can also out-compete native tadpoles for food and space, which also leads to a decline of native tree frogs.
