Fishing Rules at Babcock Ranch
With all the lakes and ponds in Babcock Ranch, it's not unusual to find a note on the kitchen table that says, "Gone fishing."

As the community grows, we want to remind residents of the rules for fishing within the Babcock Ranch Community Independent Special District.

Here are some highlights:

  • Fishing in district-owned or managed lakes requires a valid Florida fishing license for those 16 and older. Florida residents 65 and older DO NOT need a license. Other exemptions are listed here. Click here for rules for non-residents.
  • Catch-and-release fishing only.
  • Approved fishing locations are identified on the Babcock Ranch ISD “Lake Use Guidelines” document, which you can view here.
  • Cast netting is prohibited.
  • Patrons must not trespass on private residential property.

Regarding the last point, please keep in mind that fishing is permitted in waterfront easement zones behind homes, provided that they are accessed from an authorized ingress point such as your home or a contiguous public location.
How Our Maintenance Staff Stays Hydrated in Summer Heat
With summer in full bloom in Southwest Florida, it's important to stay hydrated. For advice on the topic, we turned to a member of our staff who spends most of his time outside — even as the heat index reaches the low 100s in July and August.

"I make sure I always have water with me," says Maintenance Technician Kyle Cook, who spends about 10 hours a day outdoors. "It helps to add electrolytes, which I usually get from Gatorade. The main thing is, don't push yourself. If it's 97 out, don't pretend it's 75. Listen to your body. Pace yourself." He also makes it a point to eat foods that include sodium.

How much water is enough? According to Florida Health, the current recommendation for fluid intake is for men to drink at least 104 ounces of water per day, which is 13 cups. Women should drink at least 72 ounces or nine cups.

Beyond advice on staying hydrated, Kyle offers a bonus pro tip for those who spend time outdoors in summer: "When you hear thunder, it's time to head inside. We're famous for our lightning storms here and you obviously want to avoid them."

Wildlife Photo of the Week: Green Anoles
TERRITORIAL DISPUTE: Male green anoles photographed in combat by Jim Hussey. Jim said that after the encounter, the two parted ways without apparent injury.
Dueling Repitiles are Native to Florida

This week's prize for Wildlife Photo of the Week goes to resident Jim Hussey for his action shot of two male green anoles. He said this photo was taken on the boardwalk near the head of the Dick Cuda trail as it crosses the wetlands leading to Sunset Lake.

According to Babcock Ranch Environmental Mitigation Manager Christina Kontos, the green anole (pronounced uh-NOWL) or Anolis carolinensis, is the only anole that is native to the United States. This reptile was once very common in Florida before non-native anole species such as the Cuban brown anole and knight anole were introduced. The non-natives now compete with our native green anole.

"Although this species is not a chameleon, the green anole can change colors from bright green to brown depending on their surroundings and mood," she said. "The anoles photographed are displaying combat between two males interlocking their jaws as they defend or fight for their territory and/or potential mates."

If you've recently taken a shareable wildlife photo at Babcock Ranch, we'd love to showcase it here for all to enjoy. If yours is chosen, you'll receive a $10 gift card from a Babcock Ranch business such as Publix or Slater's. Get contest details here.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
Babcock Ranch Soars to No. 10 on List of Fastest-Selling U.S. Communities
DESIRABLE NEIGHBORHOODS: More than 700 of the town’s total closed sales have occurred since July 2021.
Residents of Babcock Ranch are noticing more smiling faces around town and welcoming new neighbors on a regular basis. More than 1,700 owners have closed on their Babcock Ranch home, which was just named the 10th fastest-selling master-planned community in the U.S. by RCLCO during their mid-2022 ranking.

Many new families, retirees and young professionals are quickly discovering how truly special life is in America’s first solar-powered hometown, which welcomed its first residents in 2018. Over 700 of the town’s total closed sales have occurred since July 2021, accounting for more than 41 percent of all completed homes during the past four years.

“We appreciate our builders who, despite ongoing supply chain challenges, were able to make the reality of living in Babcock Ranch possible for so many new residents,” said Syd Kitson, chairman and CEO of town developer Kitson & Partners. “It’s humbling to think this special community is now home to so many families.”
