Drones Prohibited in Babcock Ranch
Wildlife and Drones Don't Mix

As drones become increasingly popular, please be aware that their use is prohibited in Babcock Ranch, except by the developer and its representatives. For the specific language around drone use at Babcock Ranch, please see pages 104 – 105 of the Community Charter.

Besides violating residents' privacy, drones can have unintended consequences when used for wildlife photography, sometimes stressing birds to the point where they abandon their nests.

You can help make a difference in preserving our wildlife by keeping a safe distance as you enjoy nature’s wonders.
New Resident Orientation Next Thursday
ENTER HERE: This is the east side entrance to the new Babcock Ranch Field House, located at 43281 Cypress Pkwy.
Are you new to Babcock Ranch? First of all — welcome! Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities
Looking for a way to help? Check out these upcoming volunteer opportunities at or near Babcock Ranch:

  • Eighty volunteers are needed at Founder's Square from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 to help pack meals for Punta Gorda Rotary's Ukrainian Relief Project. The group plans to pack 21,000 meals of fortified chicken rice soup for refugee camps in Ukraine and Poland.
  • Park rangers with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' W.P. Franklin South Recreation Area in Alva are soliciting volunteers to assist with a reforestation project. Wildlife Photo of the Week: Loggerhead Shrike
NOT A SNOWBIRD: The loggerhead shrike is a permanent breeding resident of Florida and prefers open grasslands with scattered trees and shrubs.
'Butcher Bird' Makes Good Use of Leftovers

This week’s Wildlife Photo of the Week, submitted by Richard Kinley, shows a loggerhead shrike enjoying a high-protein snack while perched on a sign at Sunset Park.

Wilidlife Mitigation Manager Christina Kontos was delighted to see this beautiful songbird at Babcock Ranch and offered her observations: "The loggerhead shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) is a beautiful gray, white, and black songbird with a black bandit's mask and hooked bill. It is a permanent breeding resident throughout Florida and prefers open grassland habitat with scattered trees and shrubs."

She said the shrike is an opportunistic hunter and sits on lookout posts such as wire, trees, or fence posts to swoop down onto unsuspecting prey such as large insects, rodents, lizards, or small birds. "It is famously known as the 'butcher bird,' because it has a special habit of impaling its prey on thorns or barbed-wire fences to store uneaten prey to enjoy its leftovers later."

Since 1972, the National Audubon Society has listed the loggerhead shrike as a declining species.
