COMMUNITY NEWS
New School Year Begins Monday
SCHOOL ZONE: Babcock Neighborhood School (left) and the new Babcock High School (right). The new Field House is located between the two school buildings near the top left.
Monday is back-to-school day for students and staff at Babcock Neighborhood School and the new Babcock High School, which is opening for its inaugural academic year. That means you'll be seeing students traveling by foot, car, bicycle and bus at the beginning and end of school days.

Please be extra cautious while driving in the area of our schools. Be sure to stop for school buses with flashing lights and slow down as you approach crosswalks.
Preserving the Preserves
New Blog Looks at Life at Babcock Ranch

This week we introduce an informative new feature — a monthly blog called Babcock Ranch Living. Each installment will feature a rotating roster of subject matter experts who will discuss various aspects of life in Babcock Ranch.

In the first issue, we hear from Babcock Ranch Environmental Mitigation Manager Christina Kontos, who discusses how residents can help keep our preserves in their
natural state.
Walking the Dog?
Here's the Leash You Can Do
We love our furry friends at Babcock Ranch — and they seem to love it here, too!

Please remember that dogs must be on a leash or otherwise confined whenever they are outside of your home. This includes common areas such as parks, sidewalks and Founder's Square. The only exception is at the dog park at Sunset Park. Of course, the usual local laws apply concerning registration, licensing and inoculations.

  • Please see Section 1(c) of the Initial Rules document on our website for more information.

Wildlife Photo of the Week: Eastern Lubber Grasshopper
COLORFUL CLIMBER: Resident Kerstin Bjork photographed this eastern lubber grasshopper at the entrance to Dick Cuda Trail.
This Grasshopper is Colorful — and Clumsy

This week’s Wildlife Photo of the Week shows an eastern lubber grasshopper, photographed by resident Kerstin Bjork at the entrance to Dick Cuda Trail. “This grasshopper was missing its right leg, but seemed to be able to jump and climb trees just fine,” she reports. “I love its beautiful orange color.”

According to Babcock Ranch Environmental Mitigation Manager Christina Kontos, “The eastern lubber grasshopper (Romalea microptera), a flightless and colorful grasshopper native to Florida. Although this species is equipped with forewings and hind wings, they are incapable of providing lift for flight."

Christina notes that the name "lubber" is derived from an old English word "lobre," which means lazy or clumsy, due to their slow movement and clumsy crawling.
