Sustainability Video Series Continues
CURRENT TOPIC: Dr. Jennifer Languell discusses home electricity use in the latest video in the Sustainability 101 series.
Understanding Electricity Use Patterns

Looking for ways to reduce your energy use at home? Knowing which systems and appliances use the most electricity is the first step toward understanding ways to do it.

Our resident green building expert, Dr. Jennifer Languell, has a breakdown on the biggest energy hogs in this month's edition of Sustainability 101.
Community Garden: U Pick – But Only if U Grow
It's not harvest season yet, but we want to make sure all residents understand the concept behind our Community Garden in the Lake Timber neighborhood.

The idea is, that residents who have registered for a spot in the garden put in the work to plant and tend their crops, and they are the exclusive beneficiaries of the bounty they produce. The fruits (and vegetables) of their labor are not available for anyone to take. We hope this clears up any potential misunderstanding. Please click below for detailed Community Garden guidelines.

By the way, we still have a few plots available for the upcoming gardening season. Click here for details.
Wildlife Photo of the Week: Cicada

What's the Buzz? If It's Summertime in Florida, It's Probably a Cicada

This week's winning photo in our Wildlife Photo of the Week contest shows a cicada, photographed by Nancy Sermons in her Zen garden in Lake Babcock Estates.

We asked Babcock Ranch Environmental Mitigation Manager Christina Kontos for her insights into the species. "Summertime in Florida often brings the seasonal soundtrack featuring the cicada’s (Cicadidae) buzzing song," she said. "This loud buzzing noise that drowns the night ambiance comes from the cicada’s abdomen called a tymbal, which acts as a drum.

Christina said most of the insect’s life cycle is spent underground as a nymph before emerging as a wingless juvenile. "The cicada uses its large front limbs to anchor to a tree, plant, or other structure before molting its exoskeleton while morphing into its winged adult form."

There are many species of cicada, including some that appear in great, noisy swarms every 13 or 17 years. Others — like the one pictured — emerge annually, rather than periodically.
