Last week, I introduced the
Babies Safe at Home Act of 2018
to protect babies and young kids at home. My bill will provide low-income families with up to $1,000 to assist with child-proofing their homes. Every year, 12,000 infants and toddlers die each year and more than 9.2 million children are treated in the emergency room. More than a third of children's deaths and injuries happen at home and many are preventable. While many of us can pay to baby-proof our homes, some families can’t afford baby gates to prevent young children from falling down stairs, cabinet locks to keep them away from harmful chemicals, and furniture brackets to prevent dressers from falling on curious children. I believe that one preventable child death or injury is one too many, so I’m working to get the support of my colleagues to pass this bill into law.
This week, I also am heading to Ward 7 to continue my Ward Meet and Greets. I find that smaller, community-focused gatherings give us better opportunities to dig into the weeds of the work that I’m doing for you and to hear more of your questions and concerns. I also have found that canvassing as a Councilmember, not a candidate, lets me focus better on neighborhood issues that we can resolve together. I truly look forward to seeing you at one of my next Meet and Greets or at your door.

This summer, I had the opportunity to meet owner Carlos Mateos and his team at the McDonald's restaurant on Minnesota Avenue, NE. I learned about the work of franchisees and Mr. Mateos' investments in his staff and community. I even got a behind the scenes tour and made a few batches of fries.

I enjoyed spending the day with the community, my staff, and daughter, Madison, at the National Building Museum. We explored the Fun House and experienced the Secret Cities tour with Martin Moeller, which was amazing.

I had a great time with constituents at the Free For All production of
Romeo & Juliet
at the Shakespeare Theatre. Easily the best production of this play I’ve ever seen. We took a selfie with young residents outside the theater.
